The material is too stiff the bag keeps its shape even when empty but I prefer a softer material that falls when the bag is not packed full. Waterproofing is not a concern for me and in fact I prefer a more breathable material, so if I put anything slightly damp inside it won't become steamy inside the bag. This is a plastic-like waterproof material. I hope the material softens over time but not seeing any indication that it will.
The flap is padded for more comfortable use as a backpack, but that makes the lid too stiff and heavy, and the lid doesn't fold conveniently out of the way; rather the whole lid flops over as one stiff board, taking some of the side panel along with it and gets in the way. I don't like how the lid extends beyond the zipper, providing a flap that hides the zipper... this makes it harder than it should be to find the zipper and zip/unzip around the U shape of the lid. Because of this I use the 2 outer straps with their clips to close it instead of the zipper.
Even when fully extended, the backpack straps get in the way of opening the lid and have to be fussed with to get them out of the way for unimpeded lid opening and access.

I carry a LOT of gear for work. Much of it is heavy, bulky, and awkwardly shaped. Over the last 17 years, I have blown out countless duffles from canvass to nylon. l started Using one of these 3 years ago and it barely shows any wear beyond some dirt. It is absolutely bombproof and worth the money if you need a heavy but absolutely reliable small duffle. Think of the trunks from Joe Versus the Volcano!Read Best Reviews of Gregory Alpaca Duffle Active Trail Backpack Here
