I bought this bag primarily to bike commute to work. I had shopped around for a couple weeks looking for the "perfect" commuter bag, and this one met most of my criteria. First of all, it has an external water bottle pouch, a padded back, a waist belt, and a padded shoulder strap. The organizer is straightforward and durable. The laptop area is well-padded and secure. There is plenty of room for a change of clothes, shoes, and lunchbag. The soft velvety ipod pockets will keep your cell phone or electronics safe from scratches. The only thing it is lacking is any type of reflective material to draw motorist's eyes to a cylcist, but I plan to add my own. Overall, it is an excellent bag. I did buy mine on closeout, so it was a super deal as far as money spent. I bought it in Large, and it still fits my 5'3" frame very comfortably. I would definitely recommend this bag to anyone who wanted a comfortable, durable, convenient bike commuter bag.

I carried this bag all over the British Isles and found that it had pockets for everything I could imagine needing. (I was in charge of several teenagers and had to keep records and various other items readily available.) The only way it could be better is if it could easily be converted into a backpack for even distribution of weight during longer trips. Otherwise, it is spectacular!

There are two Dakine Messenger Bag's the LG (Large) and the SL. The LG has the vertical zipper on the outer flap and the SL's is horizontal and just under the carrying handle. I mention this because for whatever reason most online resellers are displaying both as the LG.

That said, the LG holds my 15.1 laptop nicely in the padded compartment. I also like that it's a separate (zippered) compartment that is accessible from the outside. I had a messenger type bag in the past where you had to open the main flap to get to the laptop which could be a pain if you travel (e.g. airports security checkpoints).

The main compartment is HUGE and simple. Theres a pocket to hold a typical notebook and then there's the large main compartment which is deep and wide. The internal *accessory* pockets/section is very generous and secure; it's zippered to help prevent stuff from flying out. Being an IT Professional I really appreciated the internal accessory storage/pockets.

There are two outside pockets which are deep enough to hold a water bottle.

The small pocket/compartment on the main flap is also large enough to hold keys, your phone, and other smaller items that you want quick access to.

The padded shoulder strap is average but I do like the adjustment lever; I've never seen another bag that had one like it. Adjusting the length is very quick and secure. The shoulder strap is stitched to the bag so it can not be removed.

The ability to remove the waist belt is a nice feature. On my previous messenger bag this was not possible. I rarely use the waist strap and so on my previous bag it would just fly around loosely I ended up cutting them off. On this bag I just removed it and stored in the bag.

Overall this is a simple bag that has a lotta space!

As a student, I wanted a messenger bag that I can carry around.

I ordered the large bag because my current bag, which was 12 inches, was way too small to fit all my items. When I finally received it, I found it too big to carry around everyday. Instead, I use it as a carry-on for travel, when I'm carrying a lot more than usual.
