Osprey Packs Comet Daypack

Please don't get the wrong idea: this is a nicely made and nicely looking bag. Dusty grey version is a beauty. It has two shortcomings though.

First it is rather small. I don't know if the photograph shows child mannequin or just was photoshopped, but this backpack is not suitable for, say, a day trip to a national park with a child. DSLR camera, bottle of water, windbraker and that's it. No sandwiches for you, kid! Although if you're buying it for school this bag is really good.

Second due to its fancy design the main compartment is not easily accessible. For something that is definitely not a "hiking-ish" backpack this one has too many straps and clips.

P.S. The bottom is not padded, so if you're taking your camera with you you'll have to put it first into a camera bag and then into a backpack.

I have packs for just about every task possible. Most are military type packs. This time I needed one that was a little lower profile for hauling my 15" MacBook and assorted gear while traveling. I really like the layout of pockets. The shoulder straps are comfortable. The waist belt is removable. It is really thin so I don't see it as a great help unless I am climbing for some reason. I don't like the axe loop on the tail. It sticks out and begs to get caught on something. I have it looped back on itself to lessen that possibility. The zippers are smooth and seem quite sturdy. I like the zipper pulls used. Although we are now in the warmer weather here, I like that I will have no problem opening the pack with gloves on. The interior of the pack is a light grey. This is great when trying to see items in the bottom of the pack. I don't really have an opinion on the back "handle". It is a pleasing design, but I am not sure how useful. When I am setting my pack down I try not to set it "straps down". This is an old hangover from my days of carrying rucks in really muddy/nasty places. If I am going to get something on the pack, I would rather it not be on the part that will be pressed against my body. The top handle is great and perfect for carrying the pack like a briefcase. This was my first Osprey Pack, but probably not my last.

3. bottle pockets are secure enough so that a nalgene won't fall out!

4. safety whistle on chest strap is fun to blow on occasion (hands-free)!

5. color choices rock!

6. lightweight but not tiny!
