High Sierra Incline Backpack

High Sierra Incline BackpackI compared 4 High Sierra backpack models: Neo High Sierra Neo Backpack, Access High Sierra Access Backpack, Mayhem High Sierra Mayhem Backpack, and Incline (this model). I'm a 5'2" woman. For my uses (carryon for travel/day hikes), I selected the Neo model. All 4 packs had tags indicating that they could hold a 17" laptop. The Access and this Incline model could not hold my Dell 17" Inspiron. All 4 packs had pouches in the shoulder straps. The only pack that could hold my iphone in an otterbox case was the Neo model. This model had smaller (and maybe less durable??) zippers than the other 3 models. The padding on the bottom seems the same on all models. The raincover on the Access provides some extra padding when the raincover is in the hidden pouch. The padding on the backs of the packs seem to be about the same. I didn't use the packs, so I can't comment on the ventilation/airflow materials at the back of the packs.

Pros:

Fabric seems durable

Purple Print is great color. I like the black accent.

2 unattached shoulder strips (unlike the yoke straps on other models). S-shaped shoulder straps are comfortable with VAPEL(tm) reversed mesh AIRFLOW(tm) padding with COLLAR-COMFORT edge. Most comfortable straps.

Comfortable grab handle on top of pack that is not integrated as part of shoulder straps (Small/Medium hands)

Adjustable side compression straps

5 Straps for attaching accessories to the front of the pack

Cons:

Does not fit my 17" Dell Inspiron Computer. (16.5" L x 11.5) Fits 15" Dell (15"x10"). Pack gets narrower at the top, so this limits the length of PC that fits.

Grap handle at top of pack may be tight for larger hands.

Pocket for MP3 player or phone (Barely 4"x3") fits iphone without any cover. Too small for my iphone in Otterbox case

Zippers on this model seem smaller than ones on other models. Possibly less durable?

Smaller than expected. Rated as having 2350 cu in of space, more than the Neo, but this is the smallest pack. Height listed as 19", but pack slopes down at top, so less storage space. My measurements are 18x11x9 = 1782 cu in.

This is the third High Sierra Incline backpack in our family. This one replaced a different model that had a problem, and we were confident, based on our previous experience. Everything has been good so far, with the heavy loads typical of student use.

The handle on top of the backpack separated from the other material within one month of my college-aged daughter's use of it. It is still somewhat attached but halfway detached on both sides of handle. Aggravating.

This was purchased as a school book bag for my 11 year old. While he carries a few books at times, nothing too excessive....so I was very disappointed upon discovering the carry handle at the top of the bag was fraying at two locations making it difficult to carry the bag from the top. I expected better quality.
