G.I. Type Heavyweight Canvas Mini Alice Pack, Black or Olive Drab

G.I. TYPE HW CANVAS MINI ALICE PACKS - BLACKThe Good -I was pleased with the amount of gear I could get in this mini pack.

When I stuffed the main compartment full the outside pockets did not flatten out. The pockets are very large. Just for comparison you could still fit a quart mason jar in each pocket. The material seems thick and durable to be as light weight.

The Bad The pack is not as sturdy as what you would expect a soldier to be depending on. Just packing it the first time the metal ends on the straps are pulling off. If the main compartment is full the straps just do reach the buckles. That means you can not over stuff the pack or carry items under the straps like a rolled up pad or your jacket when you hike uphill. I am already looking for someone to add 10 inches or more to the straps.

The main compartment has a draw string through grommets. The material on the inside is unraveling around these holes because the grommets do not cover the holes punched.

All that said.. If you don't mind making a few alterations right away the pack is worth the low price.

The pack arrived today, I am satisfied, I got exactly what the Amazon ad described. It is a mini ALICE pack, similar to the large ALICE pack the Army issued me. I bought the mini ALICE pack for my daily hour and a half ride (each way) on a commuter bus. This pack is the right size, not too big and not too little. I need a bag/pack that will carry my lunch, extra drink cold pack and snack for the way home, diabetes kit, umbrella, DVD player, note pad, Kindle, newspaper, and work materials. This pack will hold all of this and still fit in the overhead rack or under my seat. The main compartment doesn't have unnecessary dividers, so big things go in easily. The pack doesn't have extraneous straps or goofy tie down cords. The side pockets are a good size and easily accessible. The pack is well constructed, not a flimsy kid's pack, and doesn't look like a girly tote bag. This pack will hold up for many years of constant use. Pack is versatile, would also work well for a day hiking or sightseeing, toting your sporting equipment (cleats, team uniform, and water bottle), as a carry on for the airplane, or for a weekend get away. It could be improved with a top strap handle and an interior plastic ID holder similar to the butt pack the Army issued me. The seamstress at my cleaners has a industrial sewing machine and will sew a name tape on for me. Well worth what I paid!!!

Ordered the black type when my last bag broke under the weight of my school books... was a very much affordable and wonderfully basic bag for my needs, despite the fact that I have been hauling books and keys in it instead of camping or hiking gear. Despite being oh-so soft, it very durable, a fact that I love, and I love the designsimple and rugged, a great complimentary look for my own style. It's a deceivingly small bag and it holds a LOT despite how it looksand because of the strap-design, I can reach and grab things in all compartments at ease. The only problem I could foresee with this thing would be if I was hoisted upside down, then things might spill out a bit!

The bad news is that the straps are unwieldy to get around when you HAVE to actually OPEN the compartments up, but you can usually get a nice medium-sized book out of it without having to yank and adjust straps, but trying to change books before and after classes takes a few moments longer than with a normal back pack. Also, because it's all cotton, I dread the first day it rains and I am without my large umbrella; everything's likely to get water logged, judging by its material. Another problem is that the thing looks bizarre when you wear it if it isn't completely filled out. Kinda, I don't know, like it's collapsed.

Despite its downfalls, and the fact that I thought that the material would look the same as it looks in the photo of it (it doesn't look the same, it's all black cotton, not that kind of bluish-gray hue I thought it would look like), I am glad that I ordered it, as it fits my school life like a glove.

I was looking around for a replacement hiking/camping pack that would be reliable yet inexpensive. I kept coming back to this pack, and I finally broke down and purchased it. I have to say that the shipping was speedy, and everything was perfect. The backpack was much larger than I expected, I'm not sure if I have enough stuff to fill it with lol. So, when it says 'mini', its more like ginormous. Granted, I am a small person. Overall, I am really pleased.
