Deuter Trans Alpine 30 Day Pack

I love this pack! You can fit anything in here. I bought it first for a trip to Europe, then took it out on field work in Africa. This pack has a ton of great features (pockets are just the right kind I needed, straps helped keep my stuff packed in tight instead of bumping around all over, built in rain cover which is very helpful when you're in Scotland). This pack is comfortable, big but not too big, and I was able to convert the bottom section into a camera pack with some padding.

My brother bought one of these and loved it, then I bought one and loved it. Totally worth the money.

I've been living with this pack for almost 3 years now, and I use it daily. I don't know what led me to purchase it in the first place. I found Deuter randomly and was very skeptical; was it worth testing out a new company? What if the product was crap? I guess my intention of bicycle commuting steered me towards getting the TransAlpine specifically. I've loved it so much, I got another Deuter pack for travel.

Fit

I've always had a hard time finding packs that fit well. The never seem to sit well, the straps don't adjust properly, pockets get in the way of the waist strap. This Deuter pack opened up another world to me. The hip belt fits great and is at the right height, and it's not too hard or soft. The should straps are adjustable enough that the load is distributed properly whether it's a heavy or light load, or whether I'm walking or bicycling. I usually make minor adjustments when hopping on and off the bike. I thought about getting panniers since my commute is about five miles and I knew I'd be transporting heavy loads (computer, camera, books, etc in one trip), but this pack makes panniers superfluous and tedious. It's just there on your back the whole time, and it's comfortable. And it sits in a decent place so as not to interfere with pedaling.

Storage/Space

The separate upper and lower compartments work well for separating items and distributing load. I'll admit that things are situated oddly, but it works. Other packs might sit up straight when you place them on the ground, this one falls over a lot. But frankly, just give the pack it's own seat right next to you and you're fine. The bottom compartment I use for my bicycle tools, extra clothing, and sometimes lunch. The main compartment is for my everyday books, computer, camera, etc. The top smaller compartment I use for writing utensils, my phone, accessories, and a mini pharmacy (pain killers and such). Keys go in the small hip strap pockets.

I really have no complaints about storage. It's not too big nor too small. Even on days when I only need to bring along a book with me, I still bring this pack cause I keep everything I need in it. And when I go away for the weekend, it's just big enough to bring everything I need.

"Extras"

The extra straps for compression are great for compressing the load when your load is softer materials (e.g. clothing). The straps on the back are great for carrying a helmet or a sleeping pad. I'd say the best 'extra' feature is the rain cover. It's not the easier to pull out and put on since it's packed away in the bottom, but it works so well. Its bright yellow color aid visibility, sometimes at night I'll put it on even if it's not raining just so cars can see me better. The 'handle strap' at the top is great for carrying around the pack by hand. The map pocket is handy; I always keep a notebook in there. The AirStripes are weird. but the padding makes it comfortable and it is more breathable than most packs. Some people might like the CamelBak hydration hole, but I don't use it.

I think I've covered most things. I really like this pack, and for the price it's a steal. I can only hope it'll hold up through the daily beatings I give it. I once took an over-the-handle-bars spill and landed on the pack...the zippers are a little messed up but it's nothing major. If something major happened to it; I'd instantly replace it with a new TransAlpine because of how useful it is.

Great back pack. I had a Deuter 27ltr day pack prior to purchasing this one. My 27ltr pack seemed bigger than the 30. If I were to purchase again I would have ordered the 35ltr. This back pack has a great design with lots of pockets and cleverly placed straps. The pack is strong and sturdy. I use it for hiking, carrying gym kit to work, biking and will use if for the ski season. A great all rounder back pack. Not the cheapest though so overall 4 stars.

This pack is awesome. First off, I bike 5 miles to work in the morning and I live in South Florida. I arrive with very little sweat on my back because the special Deuter "airstripes" keep that area well ventilated and it feels like the pack is empty regardless of how many things I have in it. I also look really cool because this pack is one of the more aesthetically pleasing pieces of outdoor gear I own. The pack has lots of places to put things, but not an inordinate amount of cubbies that you'll never use (like a lot of North Face stuff). The bottom compartment can be opened up to make more gallon space in the main compartment, but I keep it zipped to hold my bike lock and stuff that I take out once a day. The very bottom compartment (unconnected internally, but zipped from the outside) is harder to access so I leave stuff in there that I never need. The straps you see in the middle of the pack (on the back) link two sexy pieces of material together and can hold anything tightly to the pack itself. I even use it to hold tortillas when I'm biking back from the grocery store, and they don't slip out. The main reason I purchased this pack is as a dual bike/daypack...that said: 1) the waistbelt has plenty of cushion and even two storage compartments (not waterproof, sadly), 2) the shoulder straps connect, keeping weight off the outside of your shoulders, and 3) there are tons of little harnesses all over the place and two very effective water bottle holders on the sides. They're not very accessible while walking, but that's my main gripe about all packs when will the human race fix this? Overall, the pack gets a 9 out of 10, the only drawback being that it does not stand up at all for loading (you always have to lean its back against something). Oh, and while writing this I found a hidden zipper compartment between the main compartment and the backpadding. Perfect place for a tarp or something else flat.
