Leyden and Sons Leather Bag Co. - Williamsburg Satchel

Leyden and Sons Leather Bag Co. - Williamsburg SatchelI purchased this bag for my husband for his birthday and I couldn't be happier and neither could he! It has plenty of room. It looks exactly like it does in the pictures. It even smells like you would expect it to smell....good quality leather. I loved the way it was packaged for shipment. There is nothing that I would change. Fantastic !!!!

What can I say: I love the bag and Mick in customer service went above and beyond. Personalized service, awesome bag. I couldn't be happier. If you're a man looking for a quality bag (I'm using it with a BBP paddy insert as a camera bag that doesn't look like a camera bag as I travel in Spain, where pickpockets are roam, but plan on retiring my old laptop bag when I get home as this has so much more character and looks, quite frankly, so much more cool. I love it.

If Indiana Jones bought a satchel in 2012, THIS would be the one he would pick! Not only is the bag amazingly well-constructed with high quality threads and leather, the hardware exceeded my expectation as well. There is nothing about it I would change, down to the suede lining on the inside main compartment. The side pocket is perfect for a smartphone or portable hard drive, and there is even a strap inside with a clasp on the end that can be used to retain keys, etc, which is not shown in the ad. The double padded strap is super thick and comfortable, and I believe that this bag will endure many seasons. What was even more impressive is the length that LS goes to for package presentation. When I saw a stencil-spray painted "LS" on the outside of the box, I thought, "oh, how cute, they made it look like a crate." When I opened it up, I thought, "WOW, THIS LOOKS LIKE A FREAKIN AWESOME CIRCA-1930s INTERNATIONAL EXPLORER CRATE, COMPLETE WITH RAFFIA STRAW FOR PADDING, BURLAP FOR CHAFE PROTECTION AND JUTE TWINE FOR BINDING IT ALL TOGETHER!!!" To make it even better, the invoice, neatly tucked under the twine, also was accompanied by a page-long hand-written thank-you letter from LS. I can say this with confidence, because the punctuation makes are all distinctly different throughout the letter, along with ink thickness and darkness variations thoughout, which would otherwise not occur with a computer printer. These people ARE NOT lazy. I give them that. They really try and seem to be very concerned for the end customer's satisfaction. I think that I'll add a little snow seal to waterproof and a small layer of padding in the bottom for my laptop, and we'll be good to go for a long time.

I bought this item for my son's 21st. I was late in ordering, and din't expect to have it arrive on time. However the combination of an obviously extremely professional team and Leyden and Sons and good postal services from both the USA and New Zealand led to the item arriving very promptly. I ordered it on 29 October and it arrived on my doorstep in New Zealand on 10 November. Now for the best part, the satchel exceeded all expectations. My son Duncan absolutely loves it. He is an Industrial Design and Philosophy student at Victoria University here in Wellington New Zealand (so he knows a little about good design, sustainability, customer satisfaction, ethical manufacturing, etc etc!!) and he couldn't fault it. Thank you for a beautiful piece of craftmanship.

Regards, Michelle

Let me start off by saying that this is, for the most part, a great bag. I received it today, and it came as described. Wrapped in burlap and twine, packed with straw, etc. The experience of opening the box is pretty cool.

I have two co-workers with $600+ Saddleback bags. This Leyden and Sons bag is about 90% quality-wise compared to theirs. The leather is a little thinner in places, and the edges are a little rougher her and there, but the construction is just as solid: thick stitching thread, hefty leather, reinforcing rivets, sturdy buckles... I'm pleased with all of that.

The rivets are a mix of standard and screw in (phillips head on one side, flat rivet on the other). I checked all of them with my screwdriver and they seem secure; I don't have any immediate concerns about them. The bag strap appears to be a carryover from the rest of the line. It has the dual shoulder pads that would typically be used on the backpack configuration of some of the high-end bag clones, but since this messenger-style bag lacks all of the extra loops and connector points, the second shoulder pad is useless. Of course, it's a piece of cake to undo the buckle and just slide it right off.

Overall, the only issue that I have with this bag is the excessive dye transfer I've experienced. This thing arrives feeling like it's come straight from the tanner: it's oily and even moist to the touch. DO NOT use this with a white shirt and khakis on day 1. I know that I can do some things to mitigate the dye transfer, but ultimately it's going to take some serious breaking-in to get this thing to the point where I can throw it over my shoulder in the morning without worrying about ruining a shirt. I also tested the interior by throwing a few blank papers in with my notebook when I cam home with the bag today. Sure enough, the papers came out with noticeable oil marks.

Overall, I would still recommend a Leyden and Sons bag, but you have to know what to look out for.
