Osprey Quasar Backpack

Osprey Packs Quantum BackpackThis backpack is perfect (for me). I'd say this is the most well-rounded backpack you can buy. I use this backpack everyday for work and everyday again for extended world travel.

I would say this is a rather minimalist backpack. It only has 2 major pockets, a top pocket and a large storage compartment which is great for travelling because you can simply use a luggage lock and lock all 4 zipper hooks together. Other backpacks have 50 pockets, i think it's easier just digging through one.

In the main compartment theres a laptop compartment, my 14" ASUS fits perfectly into it with the slipcase so the laptop sits firmly against your back. THeres also a small document pocket that fits standard A4 folders and papers perfectly, its a great design.

The ipod pocket at the top of the pack is great, i keep my passport and money in there so it's easily accessible.

One reason i chose this bag is because it's waterproof material. Other bags offer rain covers but it's a hassle getting it out everytime theres some rain. Also you have to consider setting your bag down on wet bathroom floors and things like this. The pack is also stylish (at least the black is), so you will get many hot chicks if you wear it.

All of this at a great low price! Osprey is a great company, i will buy from them again in the future.

The only thing i wish it had different was larger hip-straps and a compartment to store the hipstraps when not traveling. An internal frame or suspension would be nice but considering the cost I would't expect it. The bungee cords on the outside really arent that useful, i've put things in them before in a hurry and they fell out and i lost them.

Well made, good value, excellent capacity, used on an extended stay overseas and currently used at university. Certainly would buy Osprey product again.

An awesome, high-quality backpack. It's ergonomic while helping reduce sweating.

I bought this bp mainly because I wanted one with a waist-belt, that helps distribute some of the load onto your waste, rather than just on your back. I developed persistent shoulder pain after a number of years wearing a 20-pound bp, while walking about 5 miles a day.

(Actually, there's now an epidemic of children hurting their backs and shoulders, because they are carrying excessive books, and not carrying their bp's properly. KidsHealth.org ("Backpack Safety") provides nice guidance on how to properly use a bp.)

Pros:

has waist belt that allows distribution of some weight onto waist.

frame of bp is straight and rigid, which allows air to more easily circulate around your back, helping reduce sweating on back. (It doesn't curve over and hug your shoulder-back, like in other bp's.) And the "mesh harness with Airscape backpanel", also helps somewhat. They aren't merely sponges, as found in my previous bp's.

uses a light-weight durable fabric, that seems to be waterproof. (My other bp's were heavy, with bulky rough fabric.) (I now also carry a very lightweight disposable $2 poncho in case of rain.)

compression chord streamlines bp not inflated like an accordion.

very high quality stitching and zippers

computer compartments sit above bottom, thus helping prevent computer from hitting ground when you sit it down. (But doesn't have bottom cushion.)

life-time guarantee. This is not surprising, since the material seems almost indestructable.

Cons:

doesn't have lots of space just the main compartment (with divider for computer, notebooks and books); and a mid-sized outer pouch at top (with various pockets for pens,...), and a small sleave on top of this. But, this actually made me aware that I really don't need to carry as much as I was.

My one wish would be for an outer mid-sized pouch on bottom, that could store a power chord. Currently, I must place it next to my books. Also, a wider waist belt might increase comfort.

Finding this bp was such a relief, after going through so many other cheaper ones. Perhaps the exceptional quality is the result of Osprey being located in US, rather than abroad. This seems to be an example of how American firms can still compete when located at home, by focusing on high quality. Given how important it is to properly carry a bp if you walk long distances, the extra cost is more than worth it.
