Okay, so let's start off by saying that the "backpack straps" are virtually useless. If you fill up the bag, they are too thin to be comfortable. I ended up buying a more comfortable strap and wearing the bag either across my shoulder or as a sling.
There's a wasted cellphone holder on one side (no smartphone is going to fit in that!) and the zippered pocket on the other side is too small to be useful.
The laptop compartment is roomy enough for a laptop (or sometimes two, when I took my work laptop and my personal laptop) and papers. Having to first unbuckle the flap and then unzip the laptop compartment was a hassle at security checkpoints.
My biggest wish was that the front compartment, where the pens and "stuff" goes... is only covered by the flap. I was always worried stuff would fall out if the bag temporarily got inverted in the overhead compartment of an airliner.
My wife never warmed up to the brown color and wished it was black. I was okay with the color.
