Yes, it smells strongly of chemicals. No, the stitching isn't very neat. I only needed something to slip the laptop into before putting it in my bag (to make sure it's not scratched and that if I lay the bag on the floor it doesn't take a direct hit), so this is OK. But it could definitely be better.
