Baby Sherpa Diaper Backpack
Stay-at-home dad here, looking for something a little more macho than the typical diaper bag. I arrived at the Baby Sherpa 4-in-1 Diaper Backpack a little late, as I have two toddlers rather than say, a single infant. However, given the company boasts how much that this bag can hold and how well it is designed to allow it to hold more just because of better design, I thought I would do well with this for toddlers because the bulky diapers are gone, so that leaves more room for a change of cloths, larger food items and juice cups, some of my things, etc., right? Wrong.First of all, this backpack is WAY too compartmentalized. I was doing better using the large beach style bag that I bought from Target. The main compartment is a useless size, mostly because it's divided up into three separate compartments that are each too small to be useful. The write-up boasts that this backpack has a medical kit compartment, compartments for glasses, palm pilots, cell phones, wallets, etc. Can someone tell me where all these pockets are, because I just couldn't find them. The main compartment could hold my wallet, Palm device, and cellphone, but that's about all it could hold then. The two separate zipper compartments on the side that seem to be where they think you're putting your cellphone, wallet, Palm Pilot, and glasses are very strange shapes that could maybe hold a single pair of sunglasses or a very small cellphone, but they could not hold my wallet, and definitely could not hold a woman's wallet. They surely cannot hold all of the items they mentioned. These pockets are also not padded at all, so putting your personal electronics in this pockets (which stick out like ears on either side of the backpack) would be very risky for damage. I use a small sandwich sized tupperware container for a simple medical kit. If you put that in the main compartment, you're just about done when it come to room. This is the first time I've encountered the situation where a bag actually is SMALLER on the inside than it looks like it would be looking at the outside! Usually, you're telling the opposite story about a backpack or other piece of luggage.
The much touted built-in cooler looks like it could do a pretty good job, but expect to get a wet posterior, as there is a drain hole on the bottom of the diaper bag right over your rear end. Even just sweat from a few chilled juice cups are going to leave a nice wet spot in a very improper place. Actually, that drain hole has a metal grommet around it. My backpack arrived with the material around that grommet torn away and frayed. I'm pretty handy, but about the only way that could be repaired is to install a new, larger grommet. Not something I care to have to do for a brand new $90 backpack before I ever use it for the first time! I'd be more tempted to seal that hole to avoid a wet butt.
Also, don't expect your $90 backpack to arrive with much fanfare. Mine was shipped to me in a simple clear plastic bag, loosely "sealed" by folding the bag over and sticking on one piece of clear tape. A small tag was attached to one of the carabiners, and a very crumpled "tips sheet" was stuck in the outside compartment. No warranty card, no documentation, not even a 1/2 box or anything close to retail packaging. The "shipping container" was nothing more than yet another plastic bag with a UPS label on it. For the better part of $100, I'd have to say that, yes, I expected it to be shipped in a box.
I have to say that for all the hype, this was an extreme disappointment. All the professional reviews and advertisements basically state that this diaper backpack is the end-all, be-all solution. In my opinion, it is far from a solution for anyone. I don't think it would've been useful even when I only had one infant. I also have two older teenagers, and I have to say that they have purchased better backpacks for school each year for $25 than this $90 Baby Sherpa. One year the older kids ended up with $25 backpacks that were not only better designed, but weren't damaged, had more real room in them, and came with a free, insulated lunchbox that attached to the bottom of the backpack, giving it a really nice, one-piece look. I wish I could find one of those, as I would just use it, be happier, and at almost 1/4 of the total price of a Baby Sherpa.
Save your money, and shop around in the normal backpack area of Wal-Mart, Target, etc. I think this has to be the most overated product that I've been suckered into buying in a very, very long time. Even if it was $25, I don't think I could recommend it to anyone because of how compartmentalized it is. the rest of the bag seemed to be a nice quality build, but the torn grommet is cause for concern, and another review here reports of a torn seam. So, if your $90 isn't getting you neither a better design nor better quality, what is it getting you? Correct answer: A smaller wallet that will fit in the tiny side pocket of a Baby Sherpa that you regret buying!
Besides having a bad design, the quality of the Baby Sherpa is poor. The inner seam on ours came apart after only using it over a 9 month timeframe on an infrequent basis. When we contacted the company they sent an email implying that we had misused the bag in some way to cause the seam to come apart. To get it fixed, we would have to pay for shipping. We will not bother repairing this bag before we throw it in the trash. We have many other back packs that have been used for years that never had a problem like this. We recommend that you buy something for $25 rather than waste $100 on a piece of crap like this.

I bought this because I made my own baby food, and needed something to it keep cool. It worked great for about the first month, then seemed to fall apart. The stitching came apart on one of the buckles on the shoulder straps; that ended up coming apart. And the seem came apart on the back of the back pack. I wasn't rough with it, and used it as a 'normal' baby bag. It seemed like it was made cheap, and not what I expected for a $75 product. I was excited about ordering this bag, but after reading the reviews I was a little hesitant. My brother had this bag for 8 years. Well I should have listened to the reviews. The quality of the materials used have noticeably gone down hill since my brother bought his. On the one I ordered, less then a months use, the inner divider seam completely unraveled. It was big enough to carry everything I needed and then some. So, it wasn't stuffed or over packed. I am extremely disappointed, because the style of the bag was perfect for my needs. I had purchased a Baby Sherpa Short Haul six years ago when my first child was born and we used the life out of that bag. It was perfect for us, but after so many years of heavy use (and baby #4 arriving), I decided to order the bigger Baby Sherpa. WOW, what a difference in the two bags. The materials on the new bag are absolute garbage! It feels like a cheap knock-off that you'd buy at a flea market. The diaper changing mat is also made of a cheaper material and I don't envision it holding up well with two kids in diapers. I really wanted to love this bag, since our other one served us so well...what a shame that this manufacturer has chosen to source cheaper materials. I'll most likely be contacting them directly to see about a refund. What a disappointment!

I bought this case to replace a similar one from Targus that I bought about 10 years ago and for which the zippers finally wore out. This case is similar to my previous one but is less rugged. In particular, the fabric seems thinner and the bottom of the case lacks the reinforcing hard plastic bumpers that my old one had.On the plus side, this model is lightweight and fits my small-to-medium frame better than my old one did. (The straps on my old one seemed designed for a beefier person than me; they were set so wide that they tended to fall off my shoulders unless I cinched them up tightly.) And like my old one, this case has the internal air cushions that cradle the laptop and give excellent impact protection. My old case safely transported by venerable Dell across continents for many years; I hope this model endures so well.
On the down side, I wish this case had more interior pockets. While it has plenty of raw space for things like chargers, spare batteries, calculators, and office items, there are few ways to organize stuff effectively. I wound up buying some vinyl zipper bags to segregate items within the accessory pocket.
All in all, a nice case ... and the zip-through feature works great. On a recent trip through Atlanta and Miami International, TSA seemed knowledgeable about the zip-through feature and didn't balk at all, which saved me a lot of time and aggravation going through security.

This is the 2nd Targus backpack I have bought for my husband. I did a lot of research on various brands. He loves this one and it's reasonably priced. The style is simple but very functional. Very good quality and great for a lap top. I'd reccomend this to anyone in the middle age group as the style is subtle but yet handsome.Had backpack for month; several domestic and one major international trip. Zip-thru work well in US checkpoints but not at international airports (London, Amsterdam, Brussels and Munich; must pull laptop). Not as many compartments as other backpacks, but looks more professional when attending business meetings (all black, minimal zippers). Getting files in and out is a little more difficult than typical laptop briefcase. Also note that when packed will not fit under some International coach seats (due to entertainment systems controls) or regional jets seas. Fits easily into the overhead. Easy to carry on your back and also on rollaway suitcase.Overall, very good product; would recommend to others who travel or like a backpack vs. briefcase style.The bag is very similar to what I need but I really needed it to have the same red Targus emblem on the top. It shows it in the picture but it is not on the bag. The one I recieved is black and oblong.

I've been more than happy with my Amazon-purchased Ape Case camera bag (medium) -a great value and a terrific bag. It's a workhorse that still looks new after two years.But I've wanted a backpack camera bag. Shopping around, I kept coming back to the Kata 3N1 for its versatility: regular backpack, left or right sling with quick access on either side, and criss-cross to go from backpack to sling in seconds.

Will I walk around every day with it loaded like that? Probably not. Then again, why not? Leaving out a couple or three lenses and one Speedlite doesn't reduce the weight by THAT much. (Though it's an amazingly comfortable everyday run-around backpack / sling if I leave a few items at home.)
All I have to do is sling my tripod (in its case) and light stand / umbrella (in their case) over my shoulder, or hand carry them, and go. An easily portable highly versatile studio for locations.
Does the 3N1 system really work? And how!
I have had none of the problems a few others have mentioned. I'm 6', 200 lbs, 42" waist. The adjustable waistband fits me fine, with inches to spare.
Yes, wearing it as a regular backpack is the most comfortable over time, as everybody mentions.
But the criss-cross position is almost equally comfortable, with the advantage of instantly converting to a sling. I don't feel "choked" by the straps at my neck, as a few have mentioned. Yes, I adjust them more often because of the configuration. But I don't mind, having the option to instantly go to a sling.
The adjustable padding on the straps is comfortable and effective. The quick-release buckles are strong yet easy to fasten or open. Yes, you really CAN pull the side flap open with one hand and grab your camera from the bag on the fly. The zippers are heavy-duty but smooth.
Sling position (I'm right-handed) works as advertised, with rapid access to my camera without opening the main bag, plus the stabilizing factor of resting my elbows on the bag, now slung around and lying across my front, while shooting.
Sturdy, solid protection for all that gear, plus a rain cover if needed. And yes, I'm glad to have the netbook compartment. I knew I'd use it and it's worth the extra $20.
Now that I've seen how MUCH gear I can pack, it's a daily exercise to decide what I really WON'T need when I go out, and enjoy this versatile backpack / sling at its lightest and for all it's worth. Because it's so brilliantly sized and configured that, backpack or sling, it doesn't feel clumsy or oversized at all, as you use it.
Of course, you're carrying as much as 14 pounds of gear or more in this seemingly compact case -so it's not like toting an iPhone in your pocket. You feel it. The trick is HOW and how much you might be strained by the extra weight.
The Kata 3N1 22 distributes the weight perfectly and is hands down and fully loaded the most comfortable backpack I've ever worn. You can even use it as an ordinary backpack if you like. The padded partition separating the upper from the main compartment unzips to create one large interior space (by removing the remaining velcro-strapped padded dividers).
I'm impressed. This is an organically designed ergonomic camera equipment transport-protection system that can literally change from day to day, or hour to hour, according to your personal / professional needs and schedule. Priced as well as it is designed and constructed.

I'm a photo enthusiast and I take my camera nearly everywhere. If you're like me, you're obsessing over this bag purchase, looking at all of them and trying to choose the one that works best for you. I bought this bag thinking it would be nice to have plenty of space to hold all my gear. And it does just that. I have a Canon 40D, two telephoto lenses and a short prime lense. Add to that all the usual stuff you need to own battery pack, cleaning supplies, a few filters, and spare SD cards. It all fits in the bag with room to spare for my passport, sunglasses, wallet items, even a snack and a bottle of water. It's comfortable, secure, has a waste strap for support, and the quick side opening works well. I got the one with the laptop compartment and my netbook fits in it just fine.
But the thing is just too darned big! I feel like I'm shouting TOURIST!! It sticks way up on my back and looks silly. If I use it in the criss-cross configuration, it crosses over my breasts and makes them look like Zena the Princess Warrior. I can get the side opening to work using the backpack configuration, but it's not as stable. And it's so bulky that it feels a bit unwieldy.
Finally, carrying all that stuff around made me realize that doing so is not really necessary. Do I really need to carry all three of my lenses and all my cards, filters, and gear on an outing? It makes for a heavy pack, and unless you're a pro, or a very serious ameteur, I just don't see it being necessary to take it all with me. I traded down for a lowepro fastpack 100, and I'll post a review when I've had a chance to go over it. But it looks like I'll be able to carry my camera, one spare lense and all the other accessories I need just fine. The pack is smaller, more streamlined looking, and weighs less.
I gave this item a great rating because it is a beautiful product. Quality materials, light color inside so you can see what's inside well, and lots of thought put into what a camera user needs. And I LOVE the fast access side set-up. I didn't think it would be fair to rate it down because it didn't suit my needs. But non-pros should know that it's big enough to carry a fair amount -if not allof what you own, and if you want to do that, then this bag will suit your needs. But if you want to carry your camera, maybe a spare lense, battery and SD card with plenty of room left for a sack lunch, this is overkill.

I researched for several months to find a sling bag that would be large enough to carry my D700, 3 lenses (1 of which is a larger ultrawide zoom), and various other peripherals when I travel, that would *magically* shrink to a manageable size for day hikes and around-town shooting. With exception to the Kata, I was able to examine the usual suspects in person at a local electronics superstore. The bags were either too small or too big, and none offered the flexible sling / back pack option, so I decided to take a leap of faith and order a Kata. I was leaning towards the 10, however, based on other reviews, I decided the medium size would be required to accomodate my kit. I ordered the Kata KT D-3N1-22 3 In 1 Sling /Backpack with Laptop Slot so I could tote my iPad2 as well.I received the bag quickly and was immediately concerned about the size. I decided to give it a try anyway. With room to spare, I was able to load it up with the kit mentioned above as well as my iPad, wallet, various cleaning gadgets and a few more odds and ends one would expect to carry on a day trip. I struggled with the size of the bag on my frame all day. The back pack configuration worked a little better, but the bag itself is so long. it would not sit comfortably on my tiny frame in any configuration. It also stuck out way farther than I liked. Even on my husband, who is 5'9", the profile was freakishly large.
I give this bag four stars because the quality is top-notch, and the over-all functionality is great. I just wish it had a drnk holder, as mentioned by most others. Despite the size, i was easily able to access my equipment and swap lenses without the need for placing the bag on the ground. I am going to exchange this bag for the Kata KT D-3N1-10 Sling/Backpack (Black) in hopes that it is more suited to my needs. I will update my review upon receipt of that bag.
8/17/2011 UPDATE: Received the Kata KT D-3N1-10 Sling/Backpack (Black) and love it. It's more suited to someone small like me, and with exception to my iPad, fits everything the Kata KT D-3N1-22 3 In 1 Sling /Backpack with Laptop Slot held. I am very pleased with my exchange.

This bag is fantastic. It is good looking, flexible, well organized, and sturdy. I travel worldwide, year round. I am a road warrior. I needed a bag for carry on purposes that I could also use while doing day hikes, take to the office, etc. I carry:a Nikon D7000 with 2 extra lenses
a macbook air 11 inch
a sony coolpix
two mobile phones
a wifi hotspot
two pouches with cables and wires and chargers

I used to have to carry a much larger bag to accommodate these items. But the 3N-22 works perfectly. Its a snug fit, but with all of the pockets and points of access, I can get to everything quickly. It is also sturdy.
The flexible straps work really well. I recently tested these on a mountain biking excursion in China. Used both straps while biking and pulled one to quickly slide the bag towards my chest for easy access to my DSLR. Worked quickly and easily.
My only suggestion for improvement would be for Kata to re-inforce the bottom of the bag with a water proof fabric. I set mine down all of the time, and not always in the driest of places. Otherwise, I would say this is the best bag I have ever owned... And I have tried many.
Duluth Pack Large Standard Daypack
I bought this book bag for a number of reasons. I wanted a book bag that was made in the US. The only plastic on this book bag are the zippers which everyone has and unavoidable. I am hard on the straps to where they rip off because usually i have too many heavy books. I don't have to worry about the straps no more because of the book bag itself is built so well and sturdy. In fact, I don't see me ever needing to buy another book bag, so it's worth the full price. If you are a college student like me then you'll need the Large Duluth Backpack. I recommend this product to all college and high school students. Would work well for hunting or hiking.
Booq Boa Squeeze Backpack for 13-Inch to 17-Inch MacBook, Black/Red (BSQ-BLR)
I just got this bag in and I could not be more pleased. I had previously been carrying my stuff in one of those Swiss laptop backpacks which are nice but it was much bigger than what I needed. I have to keep my laptop on me at all times for work so lugging around a big heavy bag was getting to be annoying. The items that I keep in this bag are as follows: laptop, laptop power adapter and cord, Ipad, ipad adapter and cord, ethernet cable, wireless mouse (kind of a big one cause I use a trackball), two thumb drives, pens, pencils, a leatherman, extra stack of business cards, backup apple connector cable and headphones, 1 poly-pocket folder which I keep with my laptop in the pocket to transport any documents that I would need to stay wrinkle/ fold free. I especially like how my ipad fits in the sleeve connected to the front of the laptop pocket. The Ipad in the apple case + a protective padded sleeve are a perfect snug fit. Not much else will fit in this backpack but you have room for a magazine or a small notebook in the main pocket if you need. The bag is super high quality and I think the build quality is great. It's light and small and will easily fit under the seat on an airplane so no cramming your stuff into the overhead compartment where you cant get to it. I also like how my stuff stands out against the read and white interior of the bag so its easy to find. This is my first Booq product and the bag is small and would not have worked for me while in school (dont think I could get one text book in there) but it fits my needs perfectly and based on the quality of this bag I wouldn't hesitate to buy more Booq products if I had a need.
I love the wide-mouth main zipper compartment; it ingeniously opens and gives access to all your gear. Multiple compartments inside keep everything organized and secure. Side zips are perfect for cables and accessories. Mesh pockets in the shoulder straps hold my smartphone (snugly), and similar pockets on the side of the bag are great for small items though they're too small and tight for water bottles.
The minimalist design and interior color accents are the icing on the cake, and separate this from the pack of wannabe bag brands. The top handle is a nice touch for people like me who use this as their primary office bag. The laptop sleeve fits my MacBook perfectly, is well-padded and secure no matter how much junk I'm carrying.
On the downside, it is a commuter bag only. A chest strap would be nice for those days when you've got a full load. Zippers instead of velcro tabs would be better for the interior pockets, and sleeves for pens and pencils would be a good addition.

This is really awesome for commuting, it's slim profile allows you to sneak into tighter spots without having to take it off (but, you still should when you can anyway, as all good, civilized and considerate people should.)
Do not drop your bag vertically. Have a padding, a cushion or similar that is below your laptop. I dropped the bag accidentally once and it made a dent on it :/ so add extra padding if you are the kind of guy that may be prone to this.

Timbuk2 Ikkyu Backpack (OS)
This is a very sturdy, attractive backpack. It has one huge main compartment with a laptop pocket. It also has a very small pocket on top that is just about the size of an iphone, and then one more small pocket in the front. The front pocket is too small for a larger wallet (i.e. anything bigger than a trifold wallet), so my wallet ends up swimming in the main section of the bag with everything else and I can't ever seem to find it. The front pocket is good for keys, a smaller wallet, and maybe a few other small things, but since it zips open all the way around the pocket, things can fall out. It would be great if the front pocket was a little bigger, or if there was an additional "medium-sized" pocket.

I purchased the Alps Outdoor Z Commander w/ Freighter frame pack along with a Kelty Cache Hauler. I have to say that this frame is very good quality and strong. I was very pleased and surprised at the quality of the pack. It also has a ton of space.Compared with the Kelty I listed, the Alps is quite a bit larger. The frame is heavy and the pack solid. The frame is different than the Kelty but with minor differences. The Kelty pack is much heavier fabric and has metal arms to support the pack shelf instead of heavy nylon straps. The Kelty however is quite a bit smaller.
Honestly, If I knew that the quality of the Alps pack and frame were this good, I would have purchased two and saved some coin. The Kelty is $97.00 more than the Alps. I am disapointed with the Kelty. It has a short frame and pack, and it sells for around $220.00
If you want a bunch of room,a well built pack, and a solid frame for packing, at a great price , buy the Alps.
... I honestly cannot guarantee that this pack will meet all of YOUR requirements ... But I am confident that, for the price, it is the FIRST pack you should purchase and evaluate because I could have saved over $800 if I had found this pack BEFORE buying others. The ILBE is "worth it" but is very heavy and is not optimal ... The Eberlestock V90 is just way over-priced and ain't "all that" ... a good pack, but not **THAT** good".
This pack is really two packs in one (BOTH, at the same time, BTW) ... You can strap a large duffle or a 90 (plus) liter kayak dry-bag or even a quartered deer or a full gerry-can or a stack of 5-gallon buckets, using the cargo-shelf, in conjunction with the provided cargo straps. The ruck portion can fold up and out of the way or can be quickly and easily removed. So can the separate accesory "wings", which have pockets for critical gear. There is a dedicated, elastisized retainer-pocket for a rifle butt (along with upper cynch straps) ... This is a really versatile and light-weight pack that even comes with 3 cargo strap extensions.
Cons: Design employs split-rings to retain the mounting and adjustment pins ... Cotter-type spring-pins (with retention-notches) would be much better but are cheap and easy to source. ALSO ... My friend said that HIS Commander frame was overly squeaky and made too much noise ... He said it bugged him. I do not intend to use this pack in a scout-sniper role and I am not noticing anything much worse than full ALICE noise.
I seriously doubt that you will regret this purchase. NO OTHER decent cargo-frame can do so much for anywhere near this price. Truly gives much of the capability of a Kifaru or Mystery-Ranch cargo rig, at a tiny fraction of the cost.

All those systems cost more than this one and I would quickly trade any of those, for this one ... I will keep my Eberlestock V90 and my ILBE, though ... they cost more but they are very good packs ... My Camelback BFM and the Maxpedition Condor II and FALCON II are also quite worthy (but much smaller capacity).

I like to camp and backpack in the wilderness, so I tend to carry a lot of equipment. I did a lot of research looking for a larger, more versital backpack, and once I determined that an external-frame design would meet my needs better than an internal-frame unit, I compared all the models I could find. I selected the ALPS Commander backpack and freighter frame combination. The ALPS beat them all in functionality and features.First of all, the unit as advertised, is really two products in one. The backpack itself can be removed from the frame and the 'freighter frame' part used to carry firewood or other cargo. The shelf at the bottom is part of that functionality, as well as the side cargo pouches that are part of that configuration. Since, I'm only interested in using it as a backpack I've removed the shelf (to remove weight) and moved the freighter frame pack portion to the outside of the backpack where those storage compartments can be easily accessed. That configuration provides room for more equipment and still provides access to all of the backpack compartments. I stuff it full of equipment and supplies, so it's weighs around 50 lbs. That said, it carries well, and is balanced and comfortable when setup properly.
I prefer an external frame design over an internal one because the frame can be used to strap on additonal pouches and equipment, and the frame protects the backpack when it's in contact with the ground. This keeps the pack from getting wet on damp ground or cut by sharp rocks.
Overall this is a great pack and I'm somewhat surprised it's priced as low as it is when compared to other models available with less capacity.

I was searching for a pack (frame+pack) to serve as the pack for my BOB/SHTF long term all weather survival kit. I have served 10yrs in the Army, so 1 pack to serve as my A+B bag. I have plenty of experience with the MOLLE as I have carried and rucked with one quite a lot, and have heavily modified it over the years to fit my needs, but it has proven to just be too inefficient for my intended use. I have also used the internal frame Field Pack (L), it was even more restricting, unbalanced, and quite frankly too much to purchase.So upon receiving this, it came decently packed, but in a box that was too big IMO, everything was in order. So I sat down on the couch to get familiar with the pack, adjusting for fit, removing it from the frame and reassembling it. This immediately exposed the first highly needed modification. The cotter pins that hold the pack together have a "spring-loop" much like a key chain that hold the cotter pins. There are 18 of them in total if you want to disassemble the frame. 10 if you want to remove the pack to haul game or wood or what not. If this was attempted in frigid temperatures, I think it would create a big problem once your fingers started loosing dexterity from the cold. I opt to swap out all the of the cotter pins with "lock pins" or "snapper pins" for a quick release method that could be done with gloves on with an added advantage of not having to ever worry about losing one of those "spring-loops". This upgraded cost about $32 to replace all the pins on the bag which is still under the Kelty version of this bag by a large margin!
This is an expedition size pack, there is no getting around that, the frame is large, and it extends vertically with adjustment. When I loaded up this bag which included my Rem 700 30-06, Rug 10/22 Take Down mounted on the opposite side with all my other gear (full gear list to survive for years to include snowshoes) it was 93 lb. This is a lot of weight, but it carried it well, and balanced well. I purposely tested the weight with a 30min walk, and though it was heavy. I didn't have any strange pressure points developing..very good sign! I have not had a chance to field test the bag, but the motto "If you take care of your equipment, it will take care of you" has always stood true with everything I have owned.
I really like the design of the frame, and now going through the process to allow the frame to convert into a sled utilizing the existing cotter holes, so that I can pull my cargo at times (like when there is a significant amount of snow on the ground) rather than carry it. If you've ever pack-carried a field dressed elk out in deep snow, you'd rather pull it than carry it...especially considering the load rating on snowshoes if you have them.
All-in-all, its an excellent pack for the money, and if you're looking for an expedition size pack that is versatile and won't break the bank, consider this one!

I spent a good amount of time researching backpacks for camping and kept going back and forth between internal/external frame, different makes/models... all depending on the price. I didn't want to spend over $70ish but after looking more into the ALPS Commander (reading reviews, watched a youtube video of a guy unboxing it etc) & mostly being able to load up my rifle plus the frame aspect of having a tray that could be used in bunch of different ways, I said okay.. and bought it. First of all, it arrived very quick (2days cause I signed up for Amazon Prime's 30 free trial) and once I got it out of the box, it took a little bit for me to get it setup correctly cause the bag portion can come completely off the frame and you can adjust the belt etc (also the frame came with two canvas sides w/ pockets so I tried to get it all worked in etc).. I loaded it up with all my gear, rifle and was also able to get my bow & arrows (the bow breaks down) right next to the rifle and in the little rifle stock holder that comes with the Commander bag(so there's plenty of room for all that and you can expand the straps to make more room). After loading it all up, and I mean all my camping gear.. including a 3 person tent (that tray works great for all sorts of things!!), extra blankets, tarp, ax, shovel, stove, knives, ammo, fishing tackle gear, mess gear, & food (basically all the other things I would normally bag up separately), I lifted it and thought okay maybe I went overboard cause by then it got pretty heavy, until I buckled up the hip belt and then all the weight came right off my shoulders. In short, I'm extremely impressed with this bag and its quality. I took it out last weekend and was just amazed that in the back of my truck everything I needed was all in one place, inside this bag. After three days and two nights out, it stood up great and this is a bag that I believe will last me a long time to come. The zippers work real good too.. my only concern is with the plastic buckles but that's with most bags these days. I put mine to the test pretty good and had no issue with the buckles.. though I'd imagine in time they'll probably break at one time or another.. good thing is that it came with three extra straps for using on the frame, so I take those with me for just in case. I was pretty hesitant to spend over $100 for a "backpack" but now, I'm glad I did.. this ALPS Commander is more than just a bag though, I see that now and the quality is well worth the money.Save 16% Off

Wenger Patriot Rolling Case - Black
Case is very well made, and includes a pull-out briefcase with its own handle. This case accomodates a 15.4 inch laptop, and the entire briefcase nests in the rolling case. If you remove the briefcase, that space becomes a holder for a 17" laptop. strong handles and an easy roller, with a large back pocket that opens at 90 degrees -perfect for a short business trip's worth of clothes.Better quality than equivalent Targus products (which I previously used for my 17" laptop, until the pull handle failed after a couple of years).
I like the layout. LOVE the front zip pocket and the file/flex drop down.
Note the size, particularly if you are looking at it for travel it won't fit into many of the small overhead compartments such as the CRJs. Also, If you put much into the included laptop back (like a laptop) it really bulges into the adjoining pockets both in front and back. (I don't use the back compartment for clothes, but rather books (which have to be offset as it is not tailored to fit dual 8x11 for instance).
That having been said, I *love* the bag when I am on site aka just going back and forth between the home/hotel and office. The included laptop back includes the dedicated mounting strap so it can easily ride on the main case as an add on piece eliminating any "under utilization" elements from trying to overload it. There are also no concerns with overhead in this situation.
Just don't try to over pack it and know you will be gate-checking it if space is any sort of an issue.
PS We got my wife the patriot. The layout is a little different, the "wonder" pocket that I love so much is moved to the front and it eliminates the back "extra" compartment. It isn't that much thinner and she is still having problems with it in some overheads. It also lacks the dedicated strap on the side so you end up using the handles of the case itself.

Purchased this for my husband to replace his worn out case. He liked the look and ability to put so much in it. His job requires that he fly commercial airlines often. The case does not fit under the seat in front and if he is on a commuter flight (smaller plane) it does not fit in the overhead either. If you don't need to fly, this bag is great. The Wenger Patriot is, for me, the classic road warrior bag. It has plenty of geek appeal, with its many pockets that allow the anal retentive organizer separate and categorize its content. It is large enough to be my primary carry-on for day trips up to 2 or 3 days, and small enough to squeak by as a "personal item or brief case" on most flights other than those on excruciatingly small commuter planes. The frequent traveler will see this bag being rolled around by more other frequent travelers than almost any other bag and there is good reason. It is more bag for the price than almost any other. There have been many minor version changes over the years as the company has made minor changes. I'm on my second one after about 7 years. The old one is still usable, but the wheels got embarrassingly noisy as the bearings wore out from miles of duress. My new one has slightly less room in the back compartment due to thicker, presumably more durable or cheaper-to-make tubes on the pop-up handle the old one's handle was much thinner but never gave up on me despite the fact I put that bag through hell. This is indeed the "swiss army knife of travel bags." Unless you need much more expensive "status luggage" to satisfy an executive ego, you cannot go wrong with it. My old one has been my most reliable travel companion for years, outliving 3 laptops, 2 projectors, 3 cell phones, and so on. Even though I've replaced it, I won't throw it away. It will become my second bag on those trips where I need more capacity, because these are just the right size that you can stack them and get away with carrying two of them onto most planes.
Crumpler Local Identity (S) PHOTO
One of my many hats is "professional photographer", a side issue of being a photographer is the never ending search for the "perfect" camera bag. I have settled for some Tenba Air cases for real shoot gear capacity..However for my light travel/street backpack the slot have been open. until now.
The Crumpler Local Identity comes with the "heaven" padded insert. the insert have enough room for my Leica M with 35mm and a spare lens. There is actually enough room to fit one sideways on the other side also, but even though i do it, I do not recommend it.
The S size is advertised as a 13" laptop size, however my MacBookPro 15" fit perfectly in the S.
There is a nifty zipper fake bottom which can be closed to prevent stuff from dropping down and mingling with the camera padded case.
The top is roll down with a waterproof zipper, inside is a sleeve against the back and all the way to the top for the laptop, you can comfortably carry a laptop and camera at the same time.
On each side is a vertical zipper for easy access, I put the camera case so I can reach if by sliding the bag down on my left shoulder. On the other side I put a padded lens sleeve for one extra lens. Both of the side openings have a quick connect lock for fast access and it is possible to close it while leaving the zippers open.. (just remember they are open)
This is a LIGHT pack, room for camera + 1 lens in the padded sleeve, and another one on the other side if you have a separate sleeve. you "could" put a sleeve on the top for more gear.. but then you might as well get a bigger bag.
I have been using the Local Identity S to go to the office because it take my MBP 15" and my street camera with a spare lens in serious comfort and padded safety.
If anyone of the crumpler designers read this I would love a XS size, shave off a little size and make it iPad size. with the same camera heaven insert. Thanks guys.
So is this a recommended pack.? I have a hard time using the word "recommended" since this backpack is such a specialized creature, I absolutely love mine, it is brilliantly designed and so well made, it do not swallow huge amounts of lenses, this works great for me but your needs may be different than mine.
First, the good parts:
The bag is reasonably comfortable (I'm 5'5"). It holds (snugly) a 13" MacBook Air in a Waterfield Designs sleeve, a Canon T3i with Sigma 24mm prime and flash (only the camera and lens fit in the little sack, and quite snugly). Maybe also a pouch or two about the size of a pencil case. That's about it. With all that, there's not much room for your lunch. The design is overall pretty reasonable: a top-loading pouch with a zippered divider to separate into two compartments, and two side zippers that allow access to the pouch. It's not terribly heavy, it's waterproof, and looks pretty good. In black, it doesn't really call attention to itself; I can't speak to the other colors.
Now, the not so good:
The main feature of the pack is rapid access to camera gear. Swing the sack over one shoulder, slide it around, unclip the side clip, undo the zipper and slide the camera out of the protective pouch. At least in theory. In practice, the problem comes when running into the side zippers, which curve pretty drastically. Putting zippers on a curved track is generally a recipe for disaster, and Crumpler, as good as they are, can't do anything about this. The first bag I had, the zipper went off the rails within the first week. Because the zippers are "watertight" there isn't any way to repair the bag at home. So it was back to Crumpler for an exchange, which was pretty seamless, but annoying. Now, on bag 2, I'm really careful with the zippers, and it's still pretty clearly a showstopper. There's no way to run the zipper up one-handed -one hand has to grasp the bottom of the case to help guide the zipper up its track. Admittedly, this sounds like a first world problem, but it means that there's no way to quickly close the bag while holding the camera that you've just pulled out.
Second, the female parts of the clips that close the sides of the bag aren't well secured. On one side, one of the little plastic inserts (three prong) that holds it in broke. Not surprisingly, a week afterwards, it was gone. So now I've got one side of the snap flying free. Again, no real way to repair it unless you can find the precise part somewhere. I couldn't.
Lastly, the top folds down and snaps shut. At the point of the fold, the bag material can't put up with the strain of being folded/unfolded and has started to wear through. I expect this will mean the end of the waterproofing when it does.
So the search for the perfect bag continues. I had high hopes for Crumpler, and shelled out for what is clearly meant to be a premium bag. Because of these fundamental flaws, and the way it has worn over the year, I recommend looking elsewhere.

My bag completely fell apart at the seams. there are no pockets inside. the buttons on the outside of my bag also fell off and i could not put anything in the outside pockets because they didn't close well enough. could have bought a better bag for cheaper. i did get lots of compliments on it though. i loved the looks of this backpack but if you are looking for storage it isnt too good. and also after using it for half a year it started to get shredded up. otherwise if you want a bag to take to the beach or a sleep over or something (not day to day) i found it to be good!

Overall, this is a nice laptop sleeve. My new dell inspiron fits very nicely in it with a little breathing room, and the pocket is very handy for transporting my charger. Two things to take note of: the inside is not soft, but is just plain neoprene, and the mousepad that comes with it is a joke. It's pretty much just a large square of rough felt. I'm a bit disappointed in the false advertising, because the picture on amazon shows a mouse with the sleeve and not a mousepad. Anyways, I know I'll be enjoying this sleeve and it's a good price.
