Dakine Atlas Pack Skate Backpack
Lowepro Vertex 200 AW Backpack
Pros: Despite the previous reviewers comments, I found the Vertex 200 to be very comfortable when it was completely adjusted. But to adjust it for maximum comfort I tightened all the straps very tight. Between the waist strap, shoulder straps and the chest strap, I thought it was about as comfortable as any other way for me to carry that much gear without being a roll-bag. I like that the zippers are water-proof even though I never had to test that feature. The top handle is sturdy and comfortable when the bag is off.
It's well padded and comes with many re-configureable velcro compartment walls for the interior. Shoulder straps are also very padded and comfortable when the waist and chest strap are fastened.
Cons: The laptop shouldn't be in the front flap. I'm not sure I understand the design decision of putting one of the heavier items in the whole pack on the front flap that requires lifting to get to the contents. Then when you want to fully open the pack, you have to make sure your laptop encased in the flap has a flat surface to rest upon. You certainly can't fling it open with reckless abandon.
I agree with the previous reviewer that the laptop placement also tends to make the bag tippy. Luckily my MBP doesn't weigh very much, but I can imagine if my wife's hp 15" laptop were in there it would be more of a problem. On top of that, it levers the weight of the computer further away from the body's center of gravity when being worn.
Conclusion:
The laptop placement and the somewhat useless expandable pockets on the side are the only things preventing me from giving this bag 5 stars. It is obviously very sturdy and protective. It performed great and I walked quite far with it without pain. A considerable feat for someone with bad knees like me.
If I were making the choice again I might look at the Kata backpack more closely as they decided to put the laptop closest to the body of the wearer. But I also preferred the subdued look of this bag.Bottom line: a sturdy well-built pack that could use some design improvements.
After obsessing over camera packs I chose the Lowepro Vertex 200 and brought it to Boston for a 5 day photoshoot. It was loaded down with a Canon Rebel body, 17-40 lens, 50mm lens, small tripod, flash, 14 inch laptop and various accessories. Total weight 25.6 lbs (according to airport scale)
For reference, I'm an avid backpacker and have tried on and purchased many high-end packs before.
What I like: It's stylish and built like a tank. (but weighs as much as one) Feel confident your gear will be safe inside. There are dozens of pockets and it is very customizable. Sealed zippers are a nice touch, usually found only on high-end technical packs.
Complaints: The accessory pockets on the front and inside are not wide enough for the manuals. The outer side pockets are not good for much either, I normally stick a water bottle in there. The laptop sleeve is positioned at the front of the bag, which makes the pack very tippy. It would be more stable tucked next to your back.
My biggest complaint is the harness. Due to excessive flight delays at Boston Logan, I wore this pack for 3 or 4 hours walked a mile or two. By the end of the day, my shoulders and back were killing me. Lowe makes some excellent packs for backpackers, which is why I was so surprised at the crappy suspension. It just hangs on your back.
Maybe I'm spoiled by my Atmos 50 by Osprey Packs. I've packed 35 pounds and it feels great. At $229, I expect more.

I bought this pack just before a 3 week trip to Patagonia. It had no problem carrying all my photo gear and laptop for the trip. Overall it's a good pack, can use a lot of improvement in the comfort area. This pack, as all backpacks do, suffers from the "take off the pack, put it on the ground, get out your stuff" problem, but that's unavoidable with a backpack. On the other hand, the nice thing about the pack is that the quick access zipper pouches are very nice. All of your batteries, memory cards and filters are very accessible. This is about as good as it gets with a backpack.
The major drawback to this pack I found was that it's not comfortable to wear, particularly on longer hikes. Lowepro is known to make solid, comfortable packs but this is not one of them. A friend and I both had the pack and despite all the adjustment straps we couldn't get the load to distribute comfortably. In fact, in both of our cases, the shoulder straps buckled right where they met the backpack. The pack just didn't fit correctly.

I won't go in to too much of a review of the useful aspects of the 200 other than to say for my needs it's great. I love the organizational possibilities, the high level of protection and the weather proof zippers and rain cover. A lot of great attention to detail with this pack. What I want to focus on is being 6'4" tall and needing a pack that carries well on my back. I tried the Vertex 100 and with the shoulder straps fully extended the waistband still hit me above my naval, by several inches! All I needed was a pair of PeeWee Herman pants and I'm ready to go cover a golf tournament!
The added two inches in length of the 200 made all the difference. The 300 would probably be perfect for fit but the 200 is better for travel as a carry on piece and also to hold my current photo kit. The shoulder straps are well padded and comfortable as is the waist belt. There is a sternum strap to hold the should straps in place and when properly adjusted the pounds disappear as I carry it.
One other feature I really like is the tripod carrying possibilities. The best is down the middle in the back but you can also carry it on either side to maintain easier access to the main compartments but depending on your tripod this may make the load off balanced too much.
From a tall guy, I love this pack.

1. First of all, it must be clearly stated that photo backpack reviews are going to be highly subjective... similar to whether or not one brand of shoes fit for one person etc...2. With the above being said, I've tried many photo backpacks (Tamrac Expedition, ALL of the other Lowepro backpacks); the Vertex series is the best overall compromise of them all. And it is a compromise. There is no perfect photo backpack. Ultimately, it comes down to for what purpose one is going to need the backpack for, the amount of gear they need to carry etc... With that being said, most serious photographer will have several camera bags etc...
3. What I like about this backpack is:
a. It is well made, just like all of the Lowepro product (they are the overall best camera bag company)
b. The harness is the best of the bunch; absolutely no question about it. Furthermore, the harness system has all of the various straps to fine tune the fit, which is important, the more you carry.
c. The bag has enough of the little various pockets that a photographer will require.
d. The cpu slot; not essential to me but ok. I would agree with the other reviewers in that if a good quality cpu slot is important, having it out front may be a modest problem. But if you're going to use it to mainly carry your cpu during basic travel; it should be good enough. I'm assuming that most photographers who are going to be hiking through the woods aren't going to be lugging along a laptop...
e. The inside has enough dividers to do whatever you want to do with it. I use about 60% of it for my camera gear and 40% for my hiking gear (jacket, food etc...).
4. Cons? As most others have mentioned--> size--> ie bulk, yea--> it looks like a photo backpack because it is. ie it looks like you're walking around with a box on your back, but thankfully it doesn't feel like it. And since it's well made--> yea, there is some heft to it.
5. Tangent: my fantasy photo backpack would be to have a hybrid backpack, that actually works and fits like this pack. Tamrac and Lowepro do make such hybrid packs, but do not be fooled; it's not the best of both worlds, but rather failed attempt... Until that day happens when the perfect photo backpack comes along--> get the Vertex Series without hesitation.

Mobile Edge CuteBug Messenger- 15.4-Inch PC/17-Inch MacBook (Purple)
The Green bag is for up to a 15.4 inch laptop...if you don't have a regular 13 inch Macbook, 13 inch Dell, or 13 Inch viao -or smallerthe green one is the one you should get. It does have plum coloring on it.Okay, it is indeed big, but this bag is fabulous and really well made. I've been looking for one I could love that was stylish and functional, a tall order when it comes to women's laptop bags. I'm tired of the black nylon versions that you see everywhere; why can't function and fashion meet? But on this baby the details are beautiful--from the reinforced straps (I bought it to replace my last one from which the straps tore off) to the flat exterior pocket on the back for airline tickets--and as a writer whose laptop is my baby and my livelihood, the egg carton like padding is really appreciated. And personally, I love the plum-colored velvet accents. It is a durable bag in which I fit my camera and peripherals and has a long adjustable strap that I can put diagonally over my shoulders when I'm traveling. This is the bag I've been looking for for a long, long time.

Loved the bag for it's stylish and playful use of vintage fiction. The real plus is how well-made the bag is. The materials and attention to detail are readily apparent. The bag is constructed in a way that it maintains it's shape and does not slump. Decent pockets and compartments. Better than described. A computer bag that can hold some extras and look distinctive. Not the same boring sleeve. Plan to use it as a carry on for my Macbook, papers, during a trip this summer.Want Mobile Edge CuteBug Messenger- 15.4-Inch PC/17-Inch MacBook (Purple) Discount?
I bought this bag for my HP tx-2 12.3" tablet computer (directly from Mobile Edge for almost double the price!). I bought the pink version for my daughter (who has a slightly older version of the exact same computer) a couple of months back, so I knew what I was getting before I got it. It's VERY sturdy, plush, not to mention stylish. I know my computer is tucked safely away in this baby. It has enough room for my charger, some papers and/or a slim notebook, and has side pockets for a cell phone and a small bottle of water. It comes with a nifty neoprene sleeve for added protection of my beloved computer. Of note, the pink version of this bag comes with a slightly smaller pink sleeve that fits OUR computers perfectly, but some of the reviewers of that bag complained that the sleeve was too small for their 14.1" laptops. Those with 14.1" computers may do better with the peach bag, because it comes with a black neoprene sleeve that is a good bit larger (too large for MY little tablet, which is why I gave this 4 stars instead of 5). However, I'm happy to report that a quick phone call to Mobile Edge resulted in prompt deliver of one of the pink sleeves, free of charge. If you're looking for something other than the the same ole black nylon bag for your small-ish laptop, this is just the ticket!Burton Distortion Pack (True Black)
The only negative is a design issue. The second larger pouch in the back pack, located nearest the skateboard straps, is very small and could be a lot larger. This of course can be fixed with scissors, but I find it weird that it wasn't cut like that in the first place.

The mesh on the sides are quite strong. It is also deep enough that a big bottle of Smart water does not fall out of the bag. It looks like this back pack might last until I graduate!
I am still shopping for another bag that could fit just one more case book. I have returned 3 already. I ended up coming back to this one. It is the second semester that I am using it. My husband used this bag for two years before.
One thing that is not so good in this bag. If you put your laptop toward the back, the plastic top support of the super-strong handle may cut or at least nick your hands as you ease that laptop out. But considering the wheel holds, the balance is great, I really cannot complain. This is a light weight good looking rolling backpack. My daughter loves it and receives a lot of compliments on it.

Great quality backpack. But the "glacier blue" is definitely aqua. My son wasn't thrilled. We thought it would be a NC Tarheels color, but it was a Miami Dolphins color, but lighter. It has only been 2 weeks since we have been using the bag for school. The bag is lovely big, spacious and is working well for my son. However, by the end of the first day, one of the screws on the handle was loose. I tightened it but by the end of the next day it was loose again and it's been an ongoing issue. My only complaint about this bag is that the handle could have been made a little sturdier. Other than that, it's great I just hope it makes it to the end of the school year.

This backpack is too small to fit anything more than one textbook and my water bottle (which has to go in the bag, because there is no compartment for it). It could fit more, but the zippers are very bad, and it will not close if they are not perfectly aligned and there is a lot of space for them to close. The front pocket is almost impossible to open and close. I would not buy again.Want Everest Luggage Stylish Backpack Discount?
Excellent quality for the price. I bought two of these to use as "possible" bags fill them with a spare change of clothes, flashlight, multi tool, duct tape, first aid kit, cordage, rain kit, etc. and toss them in the trunk of a car.I'd recommend spending a little more money on a more durable bag for every day carry.
It is slightly smaller than the average school backpack.

I just purchased this backpack a few days ago, and I'm really excited to finally start using it! I'm currently a college student and taking fifteen hours; as a result, I hold a look of books and a laptop, and this will really take the weight off my back. This backpack is sturdy, spacious, and the watercolor pattern is awesome! Love it!Bought this backpack as a overnight bag for business trips. I found I needed a change of clothes and my laptop and business gear and this bag fits the bill nicely. As will most Ogio bags, there are plenty of pockets and compartments for gear. The plastic bottom and wheels are smooth rolling and can take the bumps and bangs. The handle extends easily and is comfortable. I must admit, I don't wear it on my shoulders much but the straps hide away when you don't need them. And this size plays nicely with airplane carry on bins.I have had the backpack for about 4 weeks. It is roomy enough for all my business stuff and clothing for a overnite stay. The only draw back is that I found it barely fits in overhead compartments of small aircraft.Meffort Inc 15 15.6 inch Laptop Sleeve Bag Carrying Case with Hidden Handle and Adjustable Shoulder

Compaq Presario CQ62-210US Laptop PCI was looking for a durable, water resistant bag to tote around a rather awkwardly sized laptop, and this bag did not disappoint. Can accommodate basically any notebook I've ever seen, and has ample space for other stuff as well. The organization pockets are pretty good, but the little net-pouch inside sometimes lets small objects fall out if the bag tips over. The shoulder strap is a little awkward sometimes on a bike, but far superior to my old bag. The durability and construction are impressive. It has suffered hard use for nearly a year at my hands and I've yet to see a single frayed edge or stretched seam. Looks good too.

I have carried a Macbook Pro 15.4" and 13.3" Asus UL30A in this bag (sometimes at the same time) daily for 3 years now (since 2008), through thunderstorms, airports, etc. including power adapters and spare batteries, plus phone charger, USB cables, headset and earphones, and occasionally a spare external USB hard drive or two. I often ride a bike with a laptop in the padded compartment and a set of tools (wrenches, mini ratchet set, vise grips, all in a plastic bag) on the other side. Everything always arrives at its destination in the same condition that it left. The bag basically looks the same--inside and out--as it did the day I bought it, despite repeated soakings, heavy use, and many hours in the sun.Pros:
1) This bag is essentially waterproof (within reason). I have ridden a bike with it in torrential downpours for 20+ minutes without a drop getting inside. I wouldn't recommend doing this on a regular basis, but if you get caught unprepared, this bag should be able to handle it until you can get under cover or throw on a raincoat or poncho.
2) The main compartment and front pouch both have lockable zippers (with your own locks, that is), a big plus when riding through less savory areas or if you don't trust your fellow airplane passengers (I don't, especially on frequent 9-10 hour flights).
3) Easy to remove a laptop for airport security screening. It's not quite as fast as a flip open case, but I like the extra security of my laptop a) staying under cover in the rain (that happens more often than airline screenings) and b) staying inside my bag in a lockable compartment.
My only minor quibbles are:
1) The main compartment zipper sometimes separates. Not a big deal, but I would certainly pay another $5 (or even $10) for a sturdier zipper and zipper pulls with loops that are specifically designed for locks (the current ones lock well enough, though if someone really wants to get into my bag, they'll just cut it).
2) The strap is not very easy to adjust and the pad could be a bit thicker.
3) The vinyl cladding at the bottom of the case is starting to wear away at one corner, but after 3 years of relatively heavy use, that is the ONLY mark on the outside of the bag.
4) The velco fuzz strap on the laptop compartment is showing some wear from the hook velcro on the laptop compartment, but again, this is a minor issue all they (or I) have to do is lengthen the fuzzy fabric patch on the strap and this problem wouldn't arise. However, this is the ONLY sign of wear inside of the bag after 3 years of daily use.
Why 5 stars, then? This bag is better designed (in my view) for laptops than other bags that cost 3-4 times as much I think it would be tough to find a better value in a laptop bag. I'm not sure how long it will last, but if/when it eventually wears out (my guess is at least another 3-4 years), I hope Targus still makes them (especially if they incorporate some of my suggestions here)!
Mobile Edge Alienware Orion Messenger Notebook carrying case 17.3" black
High Sierra AT606 26 -Inch Wheeled Backpack with Removable Daypack
The large bag is an ideal size for a checked-bag on the plane, it will accomodate a weeks worth of clothes comfortably and is easy to close when full. The wheels are pretty rugged, being large and well-placed; I am careful with wheeled luggage after several broken pieces through the years but find these to be holding up well. The handle is sturdy and I haven't had any issues with it binding or sticking yet. There are large and comfortable carry handles on the top and side, making it easy to load/unload from vehicles and luggage racks. The shoulder straps hidden in the back panel are functional, though I wouldn't want to use them for more than a few minutes at a time; great if you encounter stairs in a subway station or hotel, but not a hiking pack of any kind.
The carry-on bag is a little on the small side, keeping a laptop and accessories and a DSLR is about all it will take; there is room for wallets, phones, passports and the like in the front compartment. The water bottle holder on the side is a fantastic place to keep an umbrella (I took it to London and was very glad for this). It stores nicely in the overhead bin on the plane.
My favorite coup with this pack so far has been at the left luggage storage in Paris and Dubai, when zipped together you only get charged for storing ONE piece of luggage! This will save you enough that the bag will pay for itself in about a year...
Overall my opinion is that this is the best solution for the frequent air traveler; it is easy to roll on pavement or concrete, you can always put it all on your back for a flight of stairs or unprepared surface, it is well-built and sturdy, it doesn't seem to show dirt easily. I have recommended it to my friends and family.Got this bag last minute before a month long trip traveling around in Europe. This thing has survived the snow, falls, and so much abuse and it still looks like it's brand new. The best thing about it is the removable backpack. It's one of the best backpacks I've ever owned thanks to all the pockets and design.

I bought this bag a couple of months ago, for a planned extended trip across Asia. When using it on a short test run to Mexico, a front zipper malfunctioned, the "teeth" keep randomly splitting open... even when very lightly filled. After a couple of weeks of trying to resolve this, they are proving to be incredibly slow in responding, and not helpful. The bag may prove to be worthless, unless they get back to me very soon with a solution.Things happen, and I understand that this bad zipper is just a bit of bad luck, but bad customer service is not an accident, and not necessary. They have lost a customer here.
