JanSport Merit Backpack

Jansport The Merit BackpackI was looking for a medium sized pack to carry stuff to and from my office. I first spotted this pack at the bookstore of my son's university. I ordered it from amazon to get a better price. All of the zippers open smoothly with no binding. I live in a relatively dry climate so I've folded the rain flaps over and out of the way. The pack has two main compartments and three smaller ones. It has a mesh pocket for a waterbottle on the side. An additional side pocket or two would have been nice but not a deal breaker. Shoulder straps fit ok. For the most part I use the grab handle on top or sling it over one shoulder as I walk from the parking lot to the building. Carries my lunch, laptop, notebook, small flashlight, G17 and a folder discreetly and comfortably. I would probably give it a 4.5 total.

I want to touch on a few key points:

Room

Durability

Annoyances

Room:

This backpack is great if you are looking to cram it full of stuff. I routinely carry my xbox 360, gym clothes, and a few snacks for work and there is still plenty of room for more. Seriously, you can fill this bag up and it'll look like you are preparing for a camping trip!

There are 2 large main pockets one of which has a divider pouch that you can easily fit a book or possibly a laptop snugly into. Then of course there are the two smaller pockets in the front. The top one (w/ logo on it) unfortunately is just a basic pocket which can be a bit too large for some items, allowing them to bounce a bit much. The lower pocket is a lot more useful as there is little compartments there. Also there is the convenient bottle holder on the side.

Durability:

I've had this for roughly 2 months and use it almost daily. So far no issues with it at all. Over my last backpack I can tell this one will last quite a bit longer. The material is much more supportive all around. My past backpacks seem to be kind of deceptive to the bottom wearing out, it looks this one is a bit more durable here due to the fabric used.

Annoyances:

I just have one small issue, I hate how the zippers are a bit hidden thanks to the lip like guard around them. A lot of times it is annoying to grab/dig for the zipper. Minor complaint on a otherwise great product.

Here are the PROs and also what I was able to fit into this backpack:

-Largest Compartment: has a padded laptop section with a wide velcro strap. In this laptop section, I place my wet/dry bag containing 2 cloth diapers, changing pad, and baby wipes container. Inside this compartment but not in the laptop section, I put a clutch purse, nursing cover.

-2nd Largest Compartment: baby blanket, change of baby clothes, rattles/toys, snacks.

-Top Small Compartment: keys, cell phone, camera

-Bottom Small Compartment: pens, napkins, plastic ziploc bags

-Side Mesh Pocket: burp cloth, bib, cloth reusable bag.

This backpack only has 1 external water bottle mesh pocket. It would be nicer if there were 2 external velcro or mesh pockets.

Since most of the functional and stylish diaper backpacks are around $100, my husband and I are so happy that this backpack fits our needs.

As a regular backpack for a student:

-thick, padded laptop section. but, the bottom of the backpack is not padded, so would suggest placing a blanket(?)/some-kind-of-cushion for your laptop.

-large compartment: if you have a thick, old-school-like laptop, then you probably only have space left for a filled regular-sized 3-ring binder.

-2nd largest compartment: lots of space for about 2-3 regular textbooks

-top small compartment: keys, camera, mp3 player. although small, there's alot of space for personal items

-bottom small compartment: has a pocket, but this compartment is shallow. you can't fit more than maybe a PDA/day planner, some napkins and some pens.

5/23/2013 update:

Now with 2 kids, it gets a little tricky with one backpack and 2 little ones. Child #1 is 2yrs old and child #2 is 4months old. Also, we currently use cloth diapers at home and disposable diapers when not at home. Our cloth diapers significantly added bulk (but not weight) to the backpack.

-largest compartment: all for child #1. the laptop section contains disposable diapers, wet/dry bag, wipes case. the non-laptop section contains spare clothes, sippy cups, 2 large thermos (hot water, cold milk, don't ask), small reusable bag of toddler utensils, Fisher-Price high-chair seat cover.

-2nd largest compartment: all for child #2. spare clothes, bibs, SkipHop changing pad, disposable diapers, toys. (we place the formula container and bottles in a long strap collapsible insulated lunch bag)

-top small compartment: camera, raisins, toddler socks. there is space for a couple more items.

bottom small compartment: reusable bags, pens. there is space for a couple more items.

-mesh pocket: baby bottle, bib.

Although I can fit more things until the zippers are stretched, I just choose not to. I know I can probably fit all the baby bottles and formula container somewhere in the backpack, but then accessing the other items would require unloading some of the backpack to access the areas at the bottom.

By the way, I bought this backpack at about $27 during a slow time (not during back-to-school times), so this backpack has become a huge lifesaver at a super low price.

I purchased this bag for my teenager entering high school. I wanted something that was comfortable enough for him to carry on his 2mile walk home from school and durable enough to withstand the standard abuse that 13 year olds boys mete out to lowly bags. The superior bag is padded in the right areas and the straps are nicely contoured, features that definitely enhance the carrying experience. I have not noticed any signs of wear and tear to date. I highly recommend this back pack without reservation or second thoughts

I did a lot of research trying to find the right backpack for my son who is entering junior high this year. It had to be right in so many waysbut most importantly, this year he's required to haul around a 2" Mead binder with notebooks in addition to his lunch, drinks, sweatshirt, books, etc. He "...can't deal with anything too huge..." I found this backpack to have the perfect measurements because every single inch of it can be tightened to be smallerin fact all the ways to adjust to fit are really easy for him to do by himself. I got it in black (safe!, and stuffed all his stuff in there without any problem and it doesn't look "too huge" at all! i found the same backpack at other locations, but Amazon sends the products I buy that I was sure to have it long before school started, and we got it within two days of ordering it! I would definitely recommend the bag and Amazon as a seller.

OGIO Politan Pack (Black)

OGIO Politan PackI found the back very well constructed and thought out. I am able to carry my 15in dell laptop with me without any problems. It will hold a 17 in laptop also. It has plent of extra pockets to carry acessories or other small items. It has sufficient room for notebooks and a couple of books also. I my only issue is I wish the it has pinch more room to carry more books or folders. Don't get me wrong it carries more than most other similar notebook backpacks but I currently have aneed to carry around 2 very thick books and a few smaller books. I just have to carry one in hand on those time sI need both just because i personally feel if I stuffed in the backpack it would apply too much pressure on the notebook and potientially cause harm to it. Other than that it is an EXCELLENT backpack and does not give the outwards appearance of a carrying a laptop so does not draw attention.

A+ for laptop backpack

A+ for extra storage room and well thought out design

Afor (personal preference) not giving just pinch more room for books

WOuld buy again if I had to. Last note is that it sits well on your back and does not shift weight while back when riding a bicycle or walking.

Thanks

This backpack pretty much rocks. It looks good even when crammed with my college textbooks and my laptop. My only complaint would be that the laptop compartment doesn't feel quite padded enough for my 15" Macbook pro. A simple laptop sleeve would ensure ample protection though.

I ordered this bag instead of the Metroid because it wasn't as deep. I'm short and although I can certainly carry the weight of a fully loaded Metroid bag, it makes be hunch over to balance. I think the Politan is built wonderfully and it fits my 14in laptop with expanded 12-cell battery with room to spare; I usually put my geology book in with it. I do think it is a little smaller than I had intended, but it works well for me. It is also distinctive enough that when the professors ask us to place our bags at the front of a (full) three hundred person auditorium, I can spot it easily and no one can steal it.

At $37 & some change with FREE shipping this is the best deal I have ever gotten on any OGIO product. In typical OGIO fashion this backpack is bulletproof & functional. You simply cannot find a better constructed product from snowboard bags to travel cases everything they make is practically indestructible & backed with a 30 year warranty. Yea I know I sound like a commercial for them, but I'm really just a regular guy that stumbled on their products a year or so ago & have never looked at anything else since. I got tired of having my backpacks start ripping seams out after half a season of plane travel & with the OGIO stuff I've had no issues at all. This is a med-size travel pack good for hauling books around campus or overstuffing with clothes for a weekend get-away. It is very well designed ergonomically, extremely comfortable to wear and has just enough pockets & storage areas to organize your stuff without being confusing or cumbersome.

Snugpak Bergen Pack,

Snugpak Bergen Rucksack, BlackI love this pack. I've taken it on several hikes and two camping trips since I bought it a month ago. It easily carries all the gear I need for summer excursions and I haven't got anywhere near filling its 100 liter capacity. I can't wait until this winter to load it with my four-season equipment and extra clothes.

A very nice design feature is that the way the bag expands upwards and not out means that when only half filled the excess fabric can be rolled up and compressed by the straps on the top flap.

An odd design feature is that the water bladder pouch is on the left wall of the pack. This means that unless properly packed the pack would lean to one side. I've remedied this by packing items that I readily need into it such as my hatchet, folding saw, climbing rope, and trekking poles. For the bladder I use a low profile pack like the CamelBak Thermobak worn between my back and the pack.

Pros:

Massive Capacity

Durable Materials and Over Engineered Seams

Two Integrated Camo Rain Covers (Woodland and Desert)

Modular Design with Rocket Packs

Oversized, Elastic Water Bottle Pouches

Massive Top Flap Pouch

Great Back Padding with Excellent Air Flow

Cons:

Relatively Light Padding on the Straps, Especially the Hip Belt (The Reason I Only Gave it 4 Stars)

Oddly Placed Bladder Pouch

All in all the best pack I've ever owned, and I've owned a lot. I'm continually updating it; for example I've added a MOLLE utility pouch to the hip belt to store binos, flashlights, granola bars, notebooks, etc.

Other reviews are correct, this is not the real thing and is made in china. You just have to remember at 6100cu, its the largest and well priced pack on the market. I mean....if bug out happens would you rather a smaller back that is better made, or something and can shove a ton of food into. I'm looking for storage space. I can wear the same clothes over and over and keep washing them, but I can't magically make food appear. I have my survival knife and fire stuff and a ton of wilderness knowledge, I can make shelters and a decent hold over out in the middle of no where, but I can't make my pack hold more items, especially food. This pack is worth it.

This is made in China and it shows.

1. I'm extremely worried about the stitches that join the shoulder straps to the top of the bag. I expected the classic "X" pattern bar tacks, but there are only single horizontal bars of stitches, and not very thick. This is a big bag that really needs more bombproof straps.

2. I was lead to believe this had some sort of internal adjustable frame. NOT SO! Inside the bag are sewn-in strips of webbing that form two vertical channels, apparently made to accept two aluminum stays WHICH WERE NOT INCLUDED!!!! WHAT NOW?! Am I supposed to stuff this giant bag to max capacity every single time, in order to get some rigidity?! Or am I supposed to fashion my own stays?! Or am I expected to make a bunch of complaints to get some stays mailed to me?! I do not want this giant pack sagging & pulling down on my shoulders all day long!

Meh. I think she's going back.

I purchased two of the Snugpak Bergen packs for use in packing trips. The packs themselves seem to be more than ample for carrying a full load, but the material around the top inner flaps is really badly sewn. In fact, one of the packs was torn in multiple places around the entire top. I have a seamstress that can repair it, but wanted to try and get a replacement first. The operative word being "TRY". I contacted the seller UNBEATABLE SALE, INC to find out what I needed to do to replace this item since it did arrive in defective condition. I got an email ONE WEEK later informing me that they would "check with the warehouse to see HOW THIS MIGHT BE DONE" like they didn't even know how to handle a simple exchange. 18 DAYS LATER I received another email telling me that they had no more of these in the warehouse and that I should go to the MANUFACTURER to see about a replacement. Of course (very predictably), the manufacturer sent me an email the following day after I sent them a note inquiring about this that I should "go to the company you purchased the item from they are the only ones who can replace it for you. If you'd like it repaired, you can ship it to us (at your cost) and the cost of repairing the item will be a stock fee of $100 plus our labor and any materials. We will then ship the item back to you and will charge you for the return shipping at that time".

The moral of the story STAY AWAY FROM UNBEATABLE SALE INC. Their customer service is less than professional, and they will not help you.

The pack itself gets 4 stars because of its capacity and function. The seller gets 1 star because their customer service sux!

This is NOT the real thing, it is a cheap imitation made in CHINA...... Junk like this will leave you stranded out in the middle of no-where wondering how you are now going to carry all your gear with a ripped out pack!

Targus Corporate Traveler Vertical Rolling 15.4" Laptop Case

Targus Corporate Traveler Vertical Roller Case for NotebookA brand you can trust! We own 4 different types and styles of Targus bags and it has not let me down yet. They are very durable and usually well made.

I bought this bag for travel overnight or up to 3 days. This bag fits my lightweight overnight clothes, neck pillow, some snacks, water bottle, a couple of magazines, my work folders, laptop, battery, cell phone, iPod, and chargers.

Easy to maneuver on the airline aisles and small enough to fit under the airplane seat. If you fill it up, it will get pretty heavy. It comes with shoulder strap but why use it if you have wheels? If you fill it up, it will get too heavy to carry on your shoulders at the airport. The wheels don't spin, but you can walk straight or turn without a problem with the wheels. The handle appears to be very sturdy for me so far. I have it for almost 9 months now and still looking new and no sign of wear or tear.

The details of this bag is great 2 outside zipped pockets. There are slots for every small and big electronic gadgets, money, pens and keys you may have! You can put small items on the small pocket like passport, e-ticket/boarding pass, etc.

I own a 15" Dell XPS laptop and is a good fit. I can also fit my 17" Inspiron on this slot. The laptop section is well padded.

If I could change somethinng I will make it TSA friendly where you can open the bag in the middle and put on the x-ray machine without taking it out of the bag.

I purchased this case after having another Targis for 3 years. That case was ok but this one exceeds all of my requirements and more. The handle is strong, computer is protected and it fits all of my electronics ( computer stuff, ipod, backup hard drive, various cables and enough pockets for papers.

All in all, an excellent case!

Targus vertical rolling laptop case exactly what a traveler needs. Have had other more expensive cases. They were too bulky or too wide to fit easily down narrow airplane aisles or had TOO many useless pockets and zippers. Just the right open space. Good front pocket for phone, airport credentials, keys and other quick access essentials. Also has ergonomically correct carry strap. So, you can roll it, strap it across your chest or carry it by handle like a briefcase. The thick, high quality canvas can take a beating and still look good. Wheels roll great and center of gravity and sturdy front platform makes it stand up without tipping over Love it!!

For around town, and on the job, I prefer this bag. It's large enough and cushioned enough for every day (I pack a MacBook Pro in a neoprene sleeve in this, and it has a lot of room for other things like an iPad, magazines, books, chargers, and other necessities for a techie type. The wheels are awesome, and the popup handle is very sturdy.

My only beef about this bag is that I wish it had more structure, and that they would lose the file folder bits in the back.

But this is a very roomy bag. You could use it for an overnight/traveling to an out of town meeting and need a fresh pant/shirt type of bag. But for long traveling, I prefer the Travelpro Executive First 18 (although that bag is somewhat heavier than this one)

I have had two iPads, a MacBook Pro, two USB hard drives, an Airport Extreme, plus all the chargers and room for some minor tools too. There are enough inside small pockets to keep little stuff like flash drives and CD/DVD's safe too.

An all around darn good bag. I imagine it would travel in an RJ better than the Travelpro referenced above because it is so lacking of structure and would be easier to jam into the microscopic bins those RJ's are notorious for.

Not to be missed is the warranty on the Targus bags. They stand behind their products. That's something that is becoming a quaint idea in this 'Made In China' throwaway future...

5pc Nylon Camo ATV Bag Set

5pc Nylon Camo ATV Bag SetIt's a well-built bag, sensibly put together, packs flat when not in use, the nylon's good quality. The straps aren't quite as burly as I had thought they would be, but they'll do, and the one ridiculous thing is, it's a camo bag, right? Then why would it have Reflexite strips in the straps?! That's pretty ridiculous as they reflect sunlight about as well as they do headlights at night, defeating the true purpose of camo. That being said, if you're looking for a durable, well-built, inexpensive bag to fit right on the front rack of your ATV, to put stuff in and carry a couple of water bottles and lunches in insulated packs, that'll last you a long time, at a great price, this is most certainly the bag.

I really like this set. With no directions it was a little interesting to figure out how to put it all together but if you have patience and do not mind putting the puzzle together you will have a nice way of storing many things. It sets back on the rack far enough to leave the seat totally open. If you have young kids who want a ride it is great because it kind of holds them from falling backward. I feel a lot safer hauling them.

Not like other bags that sag. Lots of compartments to fill up with whatever you need for your adventure. Awesome bag.

This bag will be able to meet all of our needs when we get a chance to use it. We needed a bag to be able to put extra clothes, food and cameras in and this will be able to handle all of that. For the price we paid, it was a great bargain. I have been looking for an atv bag for a few months so I've done quite a bit of comparing. This has a bottom and sides that you put into place for extra security and protection of the items you may want to take with you. As others have said, there are no instructions on how to put it together, but it's not difficult to figure out how it goes. I also liked the comments made by others about how there are no zippers to get gummed up. I can see where this can be a benefit.

Skylanders School Backpack

Skylanders School BackpackI picked this up for my son's first year of school. It has lasted the entire year with no issues.

We purchased this OVERPRICED backpack for my son in September. It seemed like it was nice...fabric is good quality, etc. He is in 2nds grade, and has no textbooks to carry...just some papers and paperback books. The straps on this backpack started to separate from the backpack in December! I didn't expect it to last more than one school year, but it could have made it more than 3 months! I would not pay more than $15 for this backpack. If you are looking for a great quality backpack...go to Pottery Barn. The Backpack we purchased before this one lasted 2 school year, and is still in perfect condition.

Sling Backpack - Silver - Harley DavidsonOk, I was looking for a lightweight backpack for when I ride my harley springer softail. I don't have saddlebags and don't want any. I didn't want a school book bag either. This sling pack has been perfect. Very lightweight, but durable. You can stuff a sweat shirt, gloves, hat, 6 pack, bungee cords, a snack and an iPad into this bag. I also put a doggie box from Texas Roadhouse in it, at the time I didn't have a six pack or sweat shirt in it. I paid 13 bucks for it. Knowing now how useful it is, I'd pay 25 for it! It looks great to! Very happy with this pack! Especially for the price.

Mimi the Sardine Coated Organic Cotton Backpack

Mimi the Sardine Backpack, JungleOn my quest for green back-to-school stuff, I've discovered this perfect backpack for my four year old son. It is totally different from what you've seen before and has got to be the ultimate backpack for pre-schoolers.

I love that it's made with Organic Oeko-Tex certified cotton (no nasty chemicals to worry about like PVCs, lead, etc.), and coated with water based acrylic for easy cleanup, you can just wipe it off or throw it in the wash. There's a loop at the top for hanging easily on a hook or door knob, the design is simple but well thought out and stream lined.

It's the perfect size for the content a little one would have, i.e. mainly lunch, water bottle, book, etc., but I would carry this myself. I hope they start making them for adults. Mimi the Sardine is an eco friendly company with a wonderful bright color palate and fun graphics.

I own 5 six of these lunch packs; I purchased 3 for my kids when they each turned 2 and starting going to daycare; had to purchase new ones when each entered kindergarten just due to the fact that we used these packs every weekday and the repeated washings eventually took their toll. But these packs are roomy, easy for the little ones to carry, unique so they are easy to spot and grab from the piles of lunchboxes and easy easy easy to clean. Five stars plus mimi and the sardine products rock!!

Bucky Fuzzy Wuzzy With Snap & Go

Bucky Fuzzy Wuzzy With Snap & Go,Eggplant,12- x 13- InchI used this for my trip to Greece and Turkey. I was on a plane often, and for many hours at a time. This travel pillow was so soft and comfortable and the snap made it very easy to attach to my carry-on.

Black Diamond Speed 22 Camping Backpack

Black Diamond Speed 22 Camping Backpack, Vapor Gray, Medium/LargeI'm that guy who's always looking for the perfect bag. When I get one that doesn't fit into my needs perfectly I'm reminded about it every time I put the bag on. It's slightly obsessive, but I've had bags in the past which have fit perfectly into my life and I find the speed 22 to be just that.

I like a small quick bag with a big personality. I want features without out clutter and the Speed22 does just that. I can use it for my everyday commute and at the same time its comfortable enough and big enough to be my overnight bag anywhere I go. It's not designed to fit a tent, but it would if you need it to.

The lid clips to the front of the bag and with this simple mechanism you can essentially fit anything you need on your back at anytime. There are plenty of compression straps which double as gear holders. I find them to be very neat and out of the way. In addition, the top lid has a couple of very useful pockets where you can store and organize all of your little knick knacks.

The design is simple, but very effective and also very stylish. I swear I look better with the bag on my back. As soon as I put it on I was very pleased with the way it fit. Very solid construction. I'll have thus bag till it dies for sure.

If your looking for a great looking versatile comfortable bag look no further. Happy bag hunting. I hope this helps.

Module 25+ PackI was looking for a waterproof backpack about a month ago, and I could not find any packs I liked until I came across Velo Transit's website. All other packs I found and reviewed are no more than a dry-sack with straps, and I wanted a full-featured backpack that I can use for all outdoor activities. I live in Seattle so I decided to stop by Velo Transit store to take a look of their products. After spending 10 minutes in the store, I purchased my first Velo Transit backpack with 2 side-pockets & laptop pouch. I have enough room to carry all my gears for just about any outdoor activities. Best of all, I know the items stored inside the waterproof compartment will not get wet! Thank you Paul & Bobby, keep up the good work for the excellent products you make.

I ordered a waterproof backpack for bicycle commuting. What I got was a very functional, roomy, extremely durable item with a lifetime guarantee for any design flaws or weaknesess. I really like the spacious main bag as I typically carry a change of clothes. It has room for those and a lunch. No more stuffing large items into "handy" little pouches and pockets barely big enough for a wallet. I also like the bright yellow as I ride at night a lot. And the two loops to clip flashers on. Got it extremely muddy last week. Hosed it off and it looks like new. Also, a very comfortable fit which is important as I commute 35 miles round trip.

I have been using this pack for the past month or so, it is a great pack for anything outdoors, especially bicycling. There is tons of room for whatever you need to carry with you and it is extremely waterproof so I can't wait to use it for biking around when it starts to get rainy this fall. I love the fact that it is all locally made in Seattle (where I live) and it's awesome to be able to support a local company. I highly recommend this pack for anyone looking for a good outdoor bag.

After a dozen or so uses, I can say that this is an excellent backpack. But there are some things to be aware of if you are considering backpack versus messenger bag.

Backpack pros: I got this because I was sick of my messenger bag moving around. The harness and panel do a good job of holding the pack in place, so climbing hills is that much more fun. The lock pocket is handy for one of the first things you usually take out upon arrival. Although a dry fall hasn't really tested the waterproofing, it looks like it will do fine. The outer material (cordura?) seems tough enough--I crashed on it the other day and there is just one wear spot of any importance over the lock pocket.

Backpack cons: As far as the backpack itself, the lining does get a little sticky if say your hand is damp or sweaty, and the lock pocket is tight enough that not much else will fit in there. This model obviously just has the big main pouch and the lock pocket--no place for your phone, no place for pens, no little pocket for paper clips or whatever. It is not a briefcase alternative like some messenger bags, and if you think you might want more in-bag organization, opt for the modules or a more expensive bag.

Backpack versus messenger bag: Besides organization and stability on your back, the main thing to think about is access. The backpack is tall and skinny, while a messenger bag is short and wide. In the latter, you can see more of your stuff and pull it out with little disruption of other items--slip out your notebook, close the bag, and move on. With the backpack, you have to be strategic about the order in which you pack things, because if you want the 4th thing down, 1 through 3 have to come out first. This means the backpack is great if you make one stop--get there, unpack, and start the day. Multiple stops might mean multiple unpacking and repacking. The opening is wide enough that you can't really walk around--at least with the bag just on one shoulder--without rolling the top and tightening down at least one of the straps. One further constraint is that the bottom of the pack is fairly small compared to the top, so the thing you might want last, like your lunch, might not end up being the bottom item in the stack. Oh, and note also that the height of the backpack means it ends up covering more of your back--even with the mesh panel I sweat more than with the messenger bag, all things being equal.

My husband uses this bag to ride 25 miles to work then back home. He has road in the pouring rain and this bag has kept everything completely dry. It's also big enough to hold his laptop and change of clothes + shoes.

Sierra Designs Rohn 15 Day Pack

Sierra Designs Rohn 15 Day PackSeems durable and comfortable. However, the back is a very large foamy curved shape thing that prevents your back from getting sweaty. However, the curved shape really reduces the space inside the pack, and you can't pack "square." Returned it.

Osprey Men's Manta 36 Hydration Pack

Osprey Men's Manta 36 Hydration Pack, Radiant Red, Medium/LargeRecently I was out hiking and a friend asked me how much I thought a good daypack would be. I told him that my dream pack was the Osprey Manta, but I didn't own it yet. When I went online to send him a link, I discovered that they had updated the series for 2013! It's slightly more expensive than the previous model, but I went ahead and bought it anyways. Here are some thoughts.

If you go to Osprey's website, You'll notice that this pack is listed as having lots of improvements over the previous years model. But what are they? There is no major feature that has been listed as having changed. All the pockets are in the same place. It's certainly possible that they adjusted the fit some, but since I didn't own the first pack I couldn't comment. As I looked at the specs, however, it became apparent that there are two huge differences.

The first difference is the size of the bag. The previous model is listed with the M/L size as 30L. In this model the M/L size is 36L. That's 1800 cu. in. for the previous model versus 2197 in the new. The smaller size went from 26L to 34L, a major increase. Though I only checked out the old versions in store, I can say that the main compartment and the electronics pocket both seem quite a bit larger.

The second major difference is the weight of the bag. Even though quite a bit of storage space was gained, the weight of the bag actually went down! The M/L bag in the previous model weight 3 lbs 2 oz, which is quite heavy for a day pack. The 2013 model comes in at 2 lbs 6 oz. More space for less weight? Yes please! I do not know if the weight of the bag is including the hydration system or not. Either way, it's gone down in weight.

The One feature I was the most excited about was the airscape back panel. From the looks of it (and the way it carries empty), you'd think that the actual bag never touches your back. This is not true. The more weight you carry and (more importantly), the more water you put in the 3 liter bladder, the more the bag sits on your back. The hydration system is designed to not fill into the actual space inside your pack (though it does some), but rather into the space in the mesh. Just don't expect that there's a full breeze through there all the time. However, the suspension is exceptionally cool! Even though parts of it do touch your back when full, there are still other parts that don't. Plus, the texture of the panel underneath the mesh has ridges on it, so air flows through very well. It's the coolest pack I've ever used.

The Hydration system is excellent. I've been hiking primarily with the platypus system of various sizes for the last 10 years. Osprey's hydration system is absolutely excellent in comparison (though the platypus is still excellent). I never detected any taste from the plastic. The bite valve has a very strong flow to it and is easy to depress with your teeth. The handle, cap, and molded back to the bladder are all excellent. One cool feature is that there is a track for the hose to run up on the panel so it stays in place. I love that there is a separate pocket for the hydration pack. The only thing to note is that the hose just comes directly out of the zipper, which once opened up some as I hiked. It's really not a problem though. I also love the way it twists back on itself to shut off.

The best feature about the system is the way the hose sits on your body. Three things contribute to this. 1. The hose is the perfect length. No extra hanging about. 2. There are straps for the hose to run through on the shoulder straps. The hose isn't detachable like on my platypus, but it's quite easy to thread in and out. 3. the magnetic sternum strap/bite valve is ingenious!

Pack size. I mostly do day hikes. I own a osprey aether 60 that's about 10 years old, but I'm a pretty light hiker so I'm capable of using a pack like this even for overnights. A few years ago I used a 30L black diamond sidewinder for a 5 day trip. I did it, but it was ready to burst! I filled this pack up with a similar load to see what it felt like. I was able to do it, but it takes a bit more planning. The carrying capacity of this pack is spread out over it's many pockets. As a day pack it's huge and works exactly as planned. If you're going to need to carry large capacity loads for any reason, be aware that you'll need to spread it out to make it fit. Also, when the pack is fully loaded I attempted to slide the water bladder in. It needed a little help, but I got it in with only minor effort.

Other features: This pack has it all. So many things to talk about. My favorite feature (and the most useful IMHO) is one that isn't as flashy. I love the dual side compression straps. My last day pack only had single straps. This feature makes it so nice to tighten down a smaller load and keep the pack balanced and flat.

The hip belt isn't a real load bearing hipbelt that lifts all of the weight off your shoulders, but it is better than many. It might lift a bit more weight but I'm unable to tighten it that much. I'm 6'1 185lbs. I didn't expect it to carry like a overnight pack though. I find it incredibly secure. The hipbelt pockets are nice but they sit back pretty far. I carry snacks for me and chapstick in one of them, and in the other I carry snacks for my dog.

I love that there is a rainfly built in to the bag. It's easy to deploy and has it's own pocket. It's sewn on so it can't be lost (UPDATE: it's actually got velcro if you want to take if off). There a number of other nice outside pockets, including the shove it pocket (which is really just the space between the two main compartments), the front stretch pocket (a good size), and the side stretch pockets. The side stretch pockets are nice but the lower side compression straps do cover them a bit.

Finally, the stow as you go pole straps are a really cool idea. What impressed me so much about them is where the poles end up sitting on your body when stowed. I can walk normally and the poles stay tucked to the inside of my body, away from my arms. It's a neat idea.

It's a dream pack. I love it. If you have any questions post them below and I'll give you an update.

UPDATE May 16, 2013: I've hiked a good number of miles now with this pack. I've also used it as a carry on bag. It's doing great! I wanted to mention that yesterday I managed to not put the cap on the water bladder properly, which caused some leakage. It actually happened twice! It was my error, but learn from my mistake and just make sure that you do indeed check to make sure it isn't leaking BEFORE you put it in your pack.

I purchased this pack mostly for my daily commute to and from work. It's about 10 miles each way, so I needed a pack that had plenty of room for clothes and lunch, but also provided a hydration system, as the ride home is usually pretty hot in the summer. I did quite a bit of research on packs before settling on this one and I'm glad that I did. The 3L hydration system is more than enough for my daily commute, but is also perfect for long mountain bike rides on the weekend. The system is easy to use and I really like the magnetic clip in the mouth valve that keeps it where it should be on the pack. The pack itself is tremendous. There are tons of pockets and it holds an incredible amount of storage. For instance, today I packed it with my tablet, clothes for work, 2 boxes of oatmeal, a bag of walnuts, a tupperware container full of my lunch, a replacement tube, tire wrench, air pressure gage, a big bottle of Listerine,my wallet, cell phone, keys and the full 3L of water. There was still room for a few more items. The pack weighed a little over 19 pounds with all of that on, but actually felt pretty light on my ride in. I love that it has the frame on the back of the pack that allows air to come through your back and not result in the soggy back that you get with most packs. It also was nice not to feel the contents of the pack slamming into your back when you hit rough spots in the road/trail. Is this pack a little pricey? Sure. Do I think that this is a case of you getting what you pay for? Absolutely! I would definitely recommend this pack for someone like me that wants something they can use for their daily commute, but also something they can use on the trails on the weekends.

This bag fits amazing, I use it for day hikes around 10 ish miles average and even for shorter runs. I've done some trail running with it the weight is distributed pretty well I however would highly recommend cinching all the compression straps, when you do it has a very low profile

It has great Space and a lot of ez access storage areas, I love the suspension straps and the mesh back is nice it allows a lot of air between u and ur bag

i haven't tried the rain cover yet but it's nice that they added this as a built in feature since this pack is bit more expensive then some of the other brands but all in all I would buy it again it feels like its going to last me a very long time

Great pack. The mesh back panel is awesome and the hydration pack is one of the easiest to fill that I have ever used

Right when I opened the box, I felt in love with the bag, it's super practical, it has enough pocket to store your items, the fact that it comes with the hydration bladder is an A++++. Also don't forget that it has the rain cover!!

At the beginning I had my doubts since I ordered the manta 36 thinking it was going to be super big, but its not! It was a good investment.

Disney Jake and the Neverland Pirates backpack

Disney Jake and the Neverland Pirates backpackwe got this at the beginning of the school year for a pre-schooler who drags {literally} it EVERYWHERE and it is still going strong-wish all book bags were made this well

My grandson was thrilled with his Jake backpack for preschool. Excellent quality and his backpack is not like everyone else's. Couldn't find a single complaint with this product or seller.

iSafe Guardian Backpack

Guardian BackpackThis bag is great! It's high quality, and the alarm is LOUD!!! Do not use alarm in the house. This might seem obvious to some, but we tested it in our house just because I didn't want to freak out the neighbors and it was very painful to the ears. My 9 year old is walking home from school for the first time this year, and this is just a little extra security. Of course, it's no substitute for "stranger danger" talks, but even double the price would be well worth it for this bag. We've had no instances of the bag accidentally going off and have not yet had to replace batteries. Just for an idea ... I told my son not to tell anyone what his bag does to avoid any curious kids wanting to pull the alarm. When kids asked what the speakers on the bag are for, he told them it's to connect his ipod. He doesn't actually have an ipod, but that took care of the curiosity. ;)

This backpack is nice quality, and sturdy enough for my 7 year old grandson. It is cool colors and a good size. The sound of the alarms is deafening!!! That thing is loud! I feel safer knowing it is there...just in case he needs it.
