Timbuk2 The Shift Pannier Messenger Bag
I am very pleased with this bag. The bungee on the bottom is an excellent feature--the bag does not bounce at all. It sits high enough that I can put it on either side of my rack, and I like that you can carry it like a normal bag. The waterproofing is excellent, as well. All in all, a perfect pannier.
As a messenger bag, it is quite stiff, but if you adjust it correctly it is comfortable to carry around. I've walked around with it one for hours and had no problems. You might want to get some sort of padding for the strap if you plan on carrying it extensively, but as I'm primarily carrying it from bike to work, from bike to party, its fine.
Thank you for a practical bag! Worth the money. After a short-lived time with a DIY messenger bag system and then a full pannier system (see: Avenir Metro review) that could have seriously injured me, I think this is the one. I've only had it one day but I am absolutely in love with the way the pannier system works. It is much faster than a normal pannier system and the hooks have caused me no discomfort whatsoever thus far when I'm using it as a messenger bag.
This is my first Timbuk2 bag and I'm really seeing what all the hype is about. The attention to detail is great. I especially love the main shoulder strap and its ingenious "memory locking" system that lets me take it on and off comfortably with my helmet still on. My 15-inch Dell Studio doesn't even begin to fit in the designated laptop sleeve, but it fits just fine in the normal cargo area. A thin macbook would fit in the sleeve and now I know why all the hipsters here in the bay area have Timbuk2s.
The cargo area appears just large enough for me to use this as my goto bag for 95% of my commuting duties, including laptop + books + jacket and grocery shopping. The fact that you can use the velcro system and ignore the clips increases the usable storage capacity of this bag. One gallon of milk should be easy and while I haven't tried it, two gallons of milk might be doable.
Conclusion: a work of art. As long as the build quality holds up and nothing breaks, I would highly HIGHLY recommend this if you are looking for a pannier bag and are either 1) unfamiliar with pannier bags and are overwhelmed with the choices or 2) don't want a pannier bag because it makes your bike look ugly, but your back hurts from the laptop you HAVE to carry.
*Edit: So I've had this for awhile now and I still stick by my claim that this is THE pannier bag for me. I've had to take it in to a seamstress to have 10 inches of nylon removed to fit my slim size, and now it fits even better. I've begun to notice the metal latches jamming into my back if I load it up and wear it as a messenger bag, but I don't feel it's annoying enough to really bother me. Final conclusion: this was a great purchasing decision.

I've been searching for a bag like this for ages. Tons of searching online for a fairly stylish pannier bag to take to work, AND for it to have some protection from the elements, to be well-made, not cost a fortune and also be easy to carry around when not on the bike. Well after 2 weeks of using it, the Shift bag from Timbuk2 totally meets all my expectations.Really good bag, very very comfortable to carry around when in messanger bag mode, the strap and strap adjustor are very comfortable.
The bag seems very durable and well-constructed. The inner lining should be great when it comes to rain (haven't experienced yet though), the pockets are solid.
The pannier clips are pretty solid. I kind of wish the bag could have had conventional pannier clips ("klickfix" style) just because they are a little more secure to the bike rack then these BUT the big trade-off is that these pannier hooks can easily be turned and velco strapped onto the back of the bag when not in use. Even the lower clip (to the base on the bike) can be hooked away a bit to it won't scratch you or snag clothing when not on the bike.
I deducted one point because I wish there could have been at least one small pocket on the exterior of the bag, in reality this is only worth a half-point deduction, so the bag is more of a 4.5*/5 for me.
After a year of researching the various Racktime, Knog, Ortlieb, etc etc "city" "commuter" style bags for something visually appealing, AND well-made I'm very glad with the choice of getting the Shift.

I absolutely loved the idea of a combo messenger/pannier bag, so when my previous panniers were finally giving up the ghost I picked one of these up.They've put a lot of work into making this just right: the detachable shoulder strap, the flat front pockets, the waterproof lining, the nicely-placed reflective strips.
They clearly put thought into the pannier assembly too: there are velcro straps to cover up and secure the hooks for your bike rack. Unfortunately, I find the whole hook/velcro assembly still sticks out enough to rub uncomfortably when I use this as a messenger. In fact, it's bad enough that I've noticed some wear and tear on my clothes if I carry the messenger for any length of time. If I were redesigning this bag, I'd consider adding a larger padded flap to address the problem.
It's still a great bag if I'm not doing a lot of walking at my final destination or I have a second bag stashed there for walks (e.g. at work). You won't catch me biking to the state fair or out to a hiking trail, but I'm pretty happy with it as a commuter bag.

I've used this waterproof bag in the rain and sun for about a month and a half now. It's sturdy yet flexible, and has great velcro or clip in options for securing the cover. Excellent side flaps under the cover to make sure no water gets in when it's wet (great in my green city of Seattle). My favorite part is the ability to quickly undo the velcro on the backside and hook it onto my bike rack for quick, easy transportation. I've filled it very full and it hasn't made me lose balance on my bike to only have it on one side, and I'm a beginning rider. I haven't even noticed a difference in terms of one side being heavier because of the bag.Fully recommend this product I'm thrilled!

The straps are very stiff, which makes it awkward to put on and take off when it is full. They also kind of cut into my shoulders sometimes, but all I have to do is adjust them.
Part of the added volume of the backpack is due to it's height. I'm 5'8" and it fits me fine, but if I was a few inches shorter, it probably wouldn't work for me. Sometimes the added height makes it difficult to reach down into it to find stuff, but I'm much happier having a backpack with plenty of room.
I haven't had the backpack long, but it is well constructed and durable.
**** UPDATE ****
I have had this backpack for a couple of years now and it has held up incredibly well. It got me through the last half of my education, and I had to carry some large heavy books. There are no tears or worn fabric.
I got a new computer since writing this. It's a 17 in. Lenovo and it fits the sleeve much better, but it's still kind of roomy.
An additional note on the straps...after a while, I got used to adusting the straps when I was putting on/taking off the backpack. It doesn't seem like such a big deal to me, but there are probably some people that will be annoyed by that. I think there is an advantage to the stiff straps and that is that they stay in place nicely.
Really good durable bag, worth the money, but then I got it for less than $30.The backback was well thought out with a pocket specifically for a calculator, or some kind of media device. The Backpack is extremely large and always fit my large AP Textbooks. This bag has been extremely durable and has surpassed my expectations. The color of this specific bag (Navy Blue) seems to been discontinued, but it is absolutely my favorite color, and I shall attempt to find this bag once more in this color.

Perfect size for my 17" HP laptop and cables. Plenty of room for cameras.Nice size zipper pockets.
Big plus...the S-curve straps fit great. Very happy (delivered today) We will see how it lasts, but it seems to be built great.
I will probably order a seperate laptop sleeve for extra padding.
I've always been a Jansport fan, and this bag meets all expectations!I purchased this backpack after my previous backpack finally fell apart after more than 10 years of use. After much research, it seemed clear that the Jansport Merit Backback was the one to go, and at the offered price (less than half than list price; I checked in stores!), it was unbeatable. I have used this backpack since many times and I am more than happy with it, it is very robust, has a lot of space, is easy to handle and comfortable. Highly recommended!
Case Logic 10.2" Netbook Sleeve - Herringbone
This Case Logic product seems to be durable and well-made, with a single zipper that opens from the top corner and down one side, so I don't have to fumble with multiple zippers. My netbook slips out quickly, and I'm ready to work. It also doubles as a temporary lap desk, though for short periods only, since the case will block your heat vents.
The outside of the case is a soft fabric that probably won't show much wear, and inside, the case is lined with neoprene to give some added protection to the netbook. The case does stretch a bit, so some people may be able to wedge in a brick plug; otherwise, there's no provision here for accessories. First of all, this fits my 10.1" Toshiba NB205 netbook perfectly. My netbook's battery sticks out a bit so I was a little worried it might not fit, but it fits beautifully.
But how hard is it to mess up a zippered sleeve to begin with? Well here's what makes this a great sleeve:
1. The zipper's open/close placement is very ideal for easy insertion into the sleeve. Some sleeves or cases that have two zippers or zippers that zip exactly half-way around aren't ideal because the sleeve flops open and makes it cumbersome to insert your netbook, zip up and go. This Caselogic sleeve zips open and closes diagonal from the fully open and fully closed end. This means you can easily grasp the sleeve with one hand and throw your netbook in and go.
2. With the zipper placement diagonal, to zip it up, the weight of the netbook allows you to zip up your sleeve with just one hand. Think about zipping a sleeve/case that has 2 zippers with one hand. Yes, I'm an engineer and I tend to focus on obscure design details!
3. The exterior is a good neutral (herringbone) color and the entire sleeve is padded and soft/spongy neoprene. Has a contemporary/stylish look when you see this up close.

This great looking Caselogic Sleeve will only fit small Netbooks or small gadgets like the iPad or Kindle (with room for accessories). I like Caselogic products and this one easily meets my expectations in quality and design, here are my observations:+ Good Looking; the brownish herringbone fabric is very classy looking
+ Good Construction; this is well made and should be durable
+ Lightweight; good protection without the bulk
+ Brightly Colored Interior; makes finding small objects\accessories easier
My only complaint (minor) is that there is a slight chemical odor from inside the case that I am hoping will dissipate over time.
This is a really good case that I expect will last a very long time!
Highly Recommended!

I received this to use with my Asus 904HA netbook http://www.amazon.com/8-9-Inch-Netbook-Processor-Storage-Battery/dp/B001GIPSAW. Perfect fit for this 8.9 netbook.Really nice earthy color to it along with a herringbone textured pattern. Inside it is a reddish orange colored. Small Case Logic logo on the bottom right hand side that is stitched in. There is also a tag on the left side.
Zipper is nice as it opens in an L shape. So it does open the top and side.
It is a sleeve so not much protection really if it is dropped.
Really nice color!
This was an amazon vine shipment so I have to let you know how it was packaged. First off it was in a 19x13x11 huge box! Inside that box it was filled half way with those plastic air cushions. Another box sized 10x9x9 contained the sleeve. Complete waste of packaging to say the least! This could have been sent inside an padded envelope.

Got this for my iPad. Looks good and protects well enough, but it is designed more for a netbook than a tablet, so there is a fair amount of extra room with the iPad inside. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but something to be aware of. In any case, it functions as expected.Stephen Joseph Kids Rolling Luggage - Dinosaur Dino

The back pack was also comfortable to wear for long periods (like waiting to board, waiting in line on the Lido deck, etc.). Even better, the side pocket was perfect for holding a large water bottle.
We abused this back pack (dragged, kicked, sand and sun) and it still looks new. We look forward to many years of use.Bought this for a surf bag. Just what I was looking for. Lots of compartments. Pretty sick. Might get another for a snowboard bag.
Case Logic NOXF-114 Pavonis 14 to 15-Inch Laptop Tote (Black)
This video tour of the Pavonis laptop tote shows the interior and exterior, construction, and demonstrates the fit for both 15" and 13.5" MacBooks. 4+ stars for 13.5 inch MacBooks (what I use it for) but only 3stars for 15" MacBook Pro.
-Debbie Lee Wesselmann The Pavonis F114 reminds me of Fernando Lamas, an SNL character played by Billy Crystal who used "you look marvelous" for a standard greeting and whose motto was "it's better to look good than to feel good." The bag does look marvelous, no question about it and it does look a lot better than the average laptop bag. It's also a pain to use because it has a major design flaw.
THE BAD
It's probably fair to start with the bad part because if the the shoulder strap being always in the way whenever trying to get things in or out of the bag is a problem then there's not need to waste time reading about specs or the other good features.
The problem is that the wide, non-removable shoulder strap does not use D-rings or any kind of ring to connect itself to the bag's body. It always stands up on top of the bag's opening and that makes it very difficult to get it out of the way when trying to get things in and out. You must constantly move it out of the way and it keeps coming back annoying. Amazon's photos should give you a pretty good ideas of what to expect.
THE GOODS
The well-protected and generously padded inner compartment can easily host a 14-15" laptop. The main compartment has 2 large partitions, one for the laptop and the second with several zippered mesh pockets, detachable little purses, pen holders and so on. Two large side pockets off which one is zippered allow for even more versatility. And, when a little more room is needed, the zippered extension option allows for the bag to expand an extra 1.5" thicker, accordion-style.
Listing some of the features/specs:
Shoulder-bag only
9 pockets/partitions by my count
4 zippered compartments
Expandable to up to 1.5" thicker
Good padding for a laptop/netbook/tablet
Security strap lets you anchor the bag around a stool leg (watch for dogs if at an outdoor cafe)
16 x 2.5 x 13.8" external dimensions
13 x 1.1 x 9.1" internal dimensions
Made in China
I recognize the bag's versatility many pockets and the ability to expand it. I also liked the quality of materials and the generously wide shoulder strap. And the bag does look pretty.
MY RATING
In spite of all the good things I mentioned above, I hesitate between a one star (I hate it) and a two stars (I don't like it) rating because the shoulder strap interference with just about everything you do with the bag is THAT annoying. Sadly, the opposite of what seems to be the Case Logic motto: "Life, Simplified." applies in this case. The Pavonis is likely to complicate your life but it will probably make you look good. Which saves it the 'one star' rating.

I have had this bag for a couple of years. Some of the other reviewers noted quality issues, the only thing I have noticed was that the bungees stretched out and gave up faster than I would have liked. I have pulled them tight and cut off the excess one or two times. The rest of the bag looks brand new, since the material seems impervious to stains and tears. Here is how I use this bag, and I love it.
#1) Airplane travel.
There is no better bag that I have found for airplane travel with kids. I don't use the changing pad that comes with the bag, since it is a bit big and bulky. I use a thinner more flexible one and slide it in the front open section of the bag along with our boarding passes. In the "laptop sleeve", I can fit either my 15" work laptop (I have to stretch it a bit to do this), or I will store my iPad, one or two magazines, a coloring book, and some paperback kids books.
I use the bottom insulated compartment for a kids change of clothes, snacks, and the airplane harness.
The top portion of the bag holds my wallet, diapers, wipes, my camera. iPad can also fit here if I am carrying the laptop.
The side pockets hold smaller treats (lollipops, stickers) for coaxing my kid to get in the seat and stay there. The other one holds my cell phone. One of the small pockets on the side has a string with a clip for keys, so I always know where they are.
The bungees can hold a kids jacket and blankie or lovey.
Then I still have the mesh pocket for a drink.
I also use a carabiner to clip on bags of food or airport purchases, there are handy plastic rings on the bag for this purpose. You can really load up and live up to the sherpa name.
Even with all this, it still fits under the seat. With this bag I feel confident to fly alone with my kid, with both hands free and an organized bag filled with kid necessities.
#2) The beach or hiking
For a day trip to the beach, I fill the insulated compartment with a frozen water bottle and snacks or a small picnic lunch. The top portion still holds diapers and also sunscreen, and magazines in the laptop sleeve. I have to carry another large tote for the tent, towels and sand toys. I use the bag as a pillow while lying on the beach. The bag will get hot in the sun, so I would only bring it if you have a tent or shade.
The handle on top makes it easy to move around once fully loaded. The straps are well padded, so I have never been uncomfortable wearing it. The back of the bag is a nice mesh fabric so I don't have a sweaty back.
I love the bag for these types of trips/outings. I think it is bit of overkill for an everyday diaper bag (except for an infant who needs formula). I don't take it shopping or to little trips around town. But it is a killer carry-on bag, and definitely beats carrying a diaper bag + cooler for picnics.

We received several diaper bags from our baby showers cheap and expensive ones. This one is by far our favorite. We love the laptop sleeve so we don't have to carry extra computer bags. The cooler in the bottom is a must-have when traveling with breastmilk or formula. Plus, it's easy to carry through an airport you can't beat that.
Want Baby Sherpa Alpha Sherpa - Black Discount?
I've had the Alpha Sherpa backpack for just over a year. I really like the cooler compartment in the bottom: it allows me to keep food items, messy bibs or other wet items separate from the rest of the bag. The side bottle compartment and mesh side water bottle holder are nice as well (I have a toddler and a baby, so it's great to have easily accessible outer pockets for each of their cups). The top compartment is rather small for 2 kids' stuff so I tend to overpack it, which may be why the zipper has split. The bungees on the front have also snapped in one place, so not all of them are useful now. The chest strap that holds the shoulder straps in place started to rip right away, so it's not very sturdy either.I like having a backpack so my hands are free: it's hard to manage a toddler and a baby when I'm worrying about a diaper bag swinging off my shoulder to whack a kid, so this design solves that issue. The shoulder straps are nicely padded so they're pretty comfortable and make it easier to carry a heavy load than with a messenger bag.
I agree with the other review that points out that you can either use the laptop sleeve as a laptop case or a changing pad carrier there isn't a way to do both. We just haven't used it for a laptop sleeve. Also, the pad that came with the bag was too small and didn't seem like it would be easy to clean, so we replaced it with the JJ Cole pad we had from our Method bag.
Overall, I'm disappointed with the quality for the price ($90) of this bag. I knew there was only a 30 day warranty when I bought it, which made me suspect that the quality wasn't outstanding but I did hope it would last more than a year. I wouldn't recommend this bag to someone using it everyday; maybe only for occassional outings.
