I purchased two of these messenger bags for my kids1st grader and a 3rd grader. I was attracted to the non-trendy look of these bags, the eco friendliness and, seemingly the size'kid size to 10years' and the option to turn from side strap, hand carry and to a back pack.
Upon receipt, the bag looked nice but quite honestly, was waaaaay too small inside. I was only able to put a 3 ring binder in it with 0 clearance for other items. The fit was extremely snug. The size was proportionate to the kids size but as far as functionality, a big zero. In this day in age, with children bringing home projects, books, endless papersno way would this have serviced our needsplus the lunch bag that was included would by any means fit inside once packed with a lunch. Again, nice look, nice idea but not efficient for school kids.

Regarding the size, but I personally consider it a plus. It makes sure they don't overstuff it and hurt their growing young backs. Even now, the end of year, they had everything stuffed in them (all books/homework/extras) to bring home, and it was great! It was no problem to just carry the lunch bags (another plus--the lunch bags are the perfect size!)
I also am hugely thrilled with the eco-friendly aspect--huge plus for me! My kids (3rd grade/girl and 2nd/boy) have used it for three years now, and I am just now replacing it because some of the clasps were broken off (slammed in the car door during carpool, not quality). I considered using them for one more year (the actual backpacks are completely in tact--seams and all, even with all the abuse this age can dish out--and, did I mention, I have a SON!!), but I thought I would get them something new finally. It is very difficult because they still look perfect.
Our nettings have held up this whole time until last part of this year my son hooked one of the pencils on something and ripped it.
I love these bags and will continue to seek out this company. The price is higher than, say Target, Wal-mart, etc., but the quality/chemical-free features are completely worth it.

i intended to give this to my eight year old for christmas to use for school like some people claimed. the size was ok but the material was so thin i doubt it would last more than a couple of months of regular use. i know it was not expensive but the same money buys a decent canvas/cotton messenger bag at the local military store. i am thankful that the return went smooth.

My daughter was thrilled to get this backpack as a back-to-school gift in late summer and now half way through second grade, it's served her well so far. It's very well made, attractive, and includes a lunch sack. Bright and cute! It is a little softer than a typical backpack, but that does not detract from usability.
My daugher can easily wear it as a backpack or a messenger bag as it was intended. At age 7, she's able to make the quick adjustments herself based on what she wants to carry over one shoulder or over both.
It easily holds a couple of folders, 2 workbooks, lunch (in the provided lunch sack), her mittens, a hat, water bottle, afternoon snack and two elementary-level library books easily. Would not hold say two-three text books with these other items, but could hold just three large texts alone without the rest. My daugher has also stuffed a sweatshirt or cardigan inside during those cooler/warmer days of fall pretty easily (non-mitten/hat-wearing season).
Perfect for a kindergarten to fourth grade student! If a kid needs to carry more than this by age 9, then it's too much as boys and girls this age should not carry more than 15% of their body weight, which is up to 10-11 pounds in most cases.
Would highly recommend to friends and other kids for sure!!

I bought this bag for my son and was slightly reluctant because of the reviews stating the size was too small. It was a great price, so I ordered it anyway. My son started 2nd grade and was happy to take this bag with him. He carries a regular sized folder for all his work and papers and also carries at least 1 small library book with him. It's the perfect size for his standard folder.
The quality is great and I think it has a nice appearance. It was fun for us to look up what nations the different flags belonged to. I started it out as the backpack style, but he also likes to carry it messenger style. It's nice that it's versatile.
I think it will definitely hold up to some abuse and make it through the entire school year easily. I'm really happy that I purchased this bag even though I thought it would be too juvenile. It's a pefect fit for my 2nd grader!
